Names, and the attendent tribulations.

Having owned several used boats over my life, I found it a bit daunting to come up with a new name for my first new boat, A Beneteau 373, now in commissioning.

My last boat was a Yamahe 33, that I had for 23 years. I renamed her Virago (after a prior Yamaha motorcycle I sold when my son was born and loved the name.) It's prior name was "Catch 22"

I once bought a used Seidelman 25 named "Happy Too", and hated the name, but was too young to flaunt the superstition, and change it, and lived with a name I hated.

My favorite name, was the old Swan racer we used to see at Block Island. It was named FUJIMO, which isn't Japanese as you might expect. ( It Meant "F**K you Jane, I'm moving out"). I actually saw it in brokerage and almost considered purchasing it just for the name.

After six months of consideration, and realizing that the radio call may be difficult, we ended up with. IIWII (It Is What It Is)

runner up was "Fiddler's Green", but I'm not ready for that quite yet.

Fair breezes, all.

There used to be a power boat in the local marina that was named something like "Linda's Choice". Once the divorce was settled the boat was renamed as simply "Choices".

I'm in the process of comming up for a name for my boat that's in commsioning, and I've only come to one decision so far; Quirky clever names are great - on other peoples boats. The prospect of being associated every day with some half-joke that made me LOL once 5 years ago is far too depressing to contemplate. For anyone who doesn't agree with me you're welcome to the best (worst?) quirky/clever/joke name I've come up with so far;

Slippery Sloop

Groan...

Worst name I saw was "No Fear" on a 35/40 foot beneteau type sailing boat.

Apart from tempting fate a bit too much for my tastes, I just thought it was wayyyyyyyyyy tacky and being based on someone else's slogan lacking in original thought.

Seen a lot that made me chuckle, but for some reason the one I always remember was "Keep 'R Wet".

I have never owned a boat, save the little chrysler dagger I had as a child, but I hope to some day.

for a race boat I like Zero Tolerance. For my dream boat i like Shiawase Maru ( Japanese meaning happiness, maru is common to boat names in japan but no one can tell me why) I tell my wife, and she reviles and says "no, it sounds like a fishing boat."

Another I've just remembered from long ago, and perhaps some of you've seen her: A yacht (don't remember is she was power or sail, mono or multi) named "Fantasy", hanging a dinghy named "Reality".

... and over on Latitude 38, there's a reference to a 51' catamaran named "Willy Flippit", hanging a dinghy named "Betty Wont". Now, I don't care who you are, that's funny right there...

::musing::

Maybe, for a long-term boat affair, one could name the boat "Money", as you're no fool.

But then, maybe it doesn't work out.

My first boat was an old Seabird Yawl named "Isa Lei" after the Fijian farewell song. I didn't like the name but couldn't think of anything better and it grew on me over the years. My friends invariably referred to it as either the "Easy Lay" or "East L.A."

I always thought a great name for a boat would be "Makanan Angin" which is Malay for "take a stroll", literally "eat the breeze". But try saying that over the VHF.

The new boat is a cat and, as much as I don't like "cat" names for catamarans the name "Polecat" does have some appeal as when I bought the boat it was a real stinker.

Ok, all the paperwork is in and just waiting for the owner to vacate before closing (he's a liveaboard).

And ... the winner is ...

A Tayana 37 cutter named "Symbiosis"

for those who need a definition:

from biology:
"The intimate living together of two dissimilar organisms in a mutually beneficial relationship."

"The living together of unlike organisms in a close, long-lasting association."

Only one active rival in the USCG database.

So, there it is.
