Starlink

Things changed a lot in the last few months and I am sure users have a better understanding of what’s going on now.

I will need internet access while in the Caribbean and Bahamas this winter.while anchoring or mooring only

I know there is now the Mobility plan for vehicles on the move like boats. The dish is $2500. $250/month plan.

1-What about the $600 dish? Anyone still using it? With which plan?

1-Does it work with the $250 plan?

Thx!

The ones I found are not recent enough to get the correct info. Changes started to slowly roll out 6 months ago. I need “fesh” info

There's no need to get the expensive system unless you are going to go faster than sailboats generally go. I've seen numerous megayachts in St. Martin and St. Barths with just the simple "pizza plate" dish, which is what I have. I'm also still on the original mobile plan despite having sailed up and down the Caribbean islands this year.

It remains an absolute game-changer for me.

Already posted in other threads but will repeat here.

We bought the RV plan 9 months ago, which is now renamed but still comes with the standard rectangular dish. We’re on the regional plan. Worked in land and ocean at sailboat speeds until this past May, even hundreds of miles from the nearest land. Now to use it in ocean cells we have to opt in to Mobile Priority Data and pay per GB. However, sailboat speeds (and we’re a relatively fast cruising cat) don’t have any effect while using standard data in land cells or Mobile Priority Data in ocean or land cells. For now, no need to pay extra for the mobile plans and high performance dish.

The dish sometimes reorients itself when we turn at anchor. Usually though, we have to manually stow then unstow the dish after the boat turns for the dish to reprint itself. In the last few weeks when dishy wasn’t sure about which direction to look it remained horizontal, which is great as it doesn’t lose connection when we turn around. Unfortunately there’s no setting to keep it horizontal - you can either drill a hole in it to access and cut the motor wires, or you can mount it by its edges and let the post do whatever it wants.

Hope this helps. Anything else you want to know?

I'm 3 days out of Hawaii, going back to CA. I'm answering using the $600 dish and the 250 maritime mobility plan. Worked coming over here a couple of months ago and working just fine now on my sailboat returning, have about 2400 miles to go.

Starlink

Look at the coverage map. If your anchorages or moorings are in the blue tiles the 150 roam plan will work.

Lots of us us the cheaper 150 plan and toggle on the priority data for 2$/gb when offshore.

Use the $600 dish and the regular roaming plan

are you really planning to work while underway!
