Reupholstered in Jan, stains on fabric - best protector for stains?

Hey all

I redid my interior cushions back in January of this year, spent an ungodly amount of my life learning how to sew and get cushions that looked the way I wanted them too. I was incredibly happy that the 7x10hour days paid off as the cushions looked pretty close to what you'd get from a professional.

Fast forward a month of having the lovely bright subrella interior fabric, I noticed staining was starting to show. I've been keeping up with vacuuming dirt and what not off the cushions, but stains are quite prevalent. I'll be house sitting come end of this month so all cushion covers are coming off and going in the wash and if need be I'll do spot treatments for hard to remove stains.

My big question is, what do y'all do to help keep stains out? Fabric guard? Scotchgard?

We are full time live aboards so need something durable.

Next time I redo cushions I think a darker color is unfortunately required.

Glen Raven/Sunbrella recommends Sunbrella Restore™ Fabric Protector & Repellent or 303® Fabric Guard™, available in the United States, and Tex’Aktiv, available internationally.
Applying a retreatment:
Clean Sunbrella fabric, using one of the cleaning methods outlined.
Allow Sunbrella to completely air dry.
Apply retreatment outdoors in a well-ventilated area following instructions on the container.

Re: Reupholstered in Jan, stains on fabric - best protector for stains?

chowdan, it depends on what the "stain" is from. I have never been able to get oil borne stains out of Sunbrella. The best thing to use is waterless hand cleaner, and brush it in gently with a fingernail brush. However, it generally comes up pretty well from regular laundry detergent.

I have tried Scotchgard, never used the 303. It may help, but it's not magic.

I'd like to mention something we did, because , for us it worked okay. I made the bottoms of the cushions out of white sunbrella, and when it was too hot to sit on the dark red side, it was okay to walk or sit on the white. Now, it did have a tendency to get mildew, but if you launder them after they get salty you can minimize that. It allowed us to have the color we wanted mostly, but addressed the what-to-do-when-the-fabric-gets-too-hot? question.

Good luck with your cushions.
