Re: Second liveaboard question: aerobic exercise?

Stand Up Paddleboard. I have one, an inflatable one, that I have used only a couple of times. It seems tippy, therefore requiring close attention to balancing. Paddling while standing uses a lot of muscles. The paddle is long, so the force has to go from your feet up through your body and down through the paddle to accomplish locomotion. In my locale the water temperature is such that most people I see paddleboarding are wearing wetsuits.

Re: Second liveaboard question: aerobic exercise?

As noted, SUP gives this valuable workout to many parts of the body from top down. It gives excellent strength to the back, belly and the muscles located on each side of the body.

It is a very very good exercise and also a way to get ashore in style.

On bigger boats, a plain rigid SUP can be easily stored. Rigids are somewhat more stable than inflatables, but you can also get more stability when the inflatable is larger (more volume and more rounded ends).

Well worth trying out. Local beach rents them 5 USD an hour.

Tie you tender/kayak to the stern and row/paddle in a tug of war with the boat.

The folks I have seen on paddle boards don't appear to be getting much in the way of aerobic exercise. More slow and majestic.

Just like bicycling, walking or swimming - it’s all about intensity. Believe you me that upping your stroke rate and the amounts of reach and rotation make SUPping an excellent full body workout. Add in waves and your core will get awesome.

Re: Second liveaboard question: aerobic exercise?

I was joking with a client last week about this issue. I told him to hook up his bike to the anchor winch! That's going to get your heart racing particularly at night on a lee shore!
Cheers

One may quiet readily perceive that sitting down and maintaining stability in or on a canoe, paddle board etc. with a double ended paddle stroking like mad would be an excellent aerobic exercise but attempting the same standing up a little precarious. I see a lot of them because I permanently cruise in warm areas and those attempting majesty far outnumber those attempting to cover ground. Pondering on it for a bit I'd put the ratio at lots to none.

Some boats take more effort than others, Maybe you could consider a Dromon, Penteconter or Trireme - single handed these can offer quite the workout.

Any sport where you can 'pause' or 'sit down for a moment' is sub-optimal from aerobic point of view.

That's why running, swimming and biking are hard to substitute.

Long slow strokes will have to do with things like: 1) fitness level (people less fit paddle slower - they also walk slower, run slower, etc.) 2) effiiciency - paddling slow takes you further (same like motoring slow takes you further per fuel unit), 3) pleasure - I liked it quick when I was younger, now I like it to last though.

Etc.

But you are right that the regular way to do it is long steady strokes. Still, one CAN bash it over one mile, eh? I bet you lungs will get plenty of exercise then!

Bash it, if you want AEROBIC exercise.

Re: Second liveaboard question: aerobic exercise?

Back in days of yore remote ranches in Australia had pedal tranceivers to enable them to call the flying doctor and for the kids to do their schoolwork. Maybe they could convert an exercise bike to drive an alternator and charge the batteries whilst getting fit.
