They are these cuts in the land in Florida. They are in between all the houses in the developments.

If you picture a neighborhood and you picture a road running right down the middle of it with lots of houses on either side lining the road… , now fill that road with water and some docks, that’s pretty much what a canal is. .

They look like this from the sky.
That explains Florida in a nutshell; packed like rats, act like rats.

I know that was a blunt and generic question. I know what a canal is generally, but I think this info is what I was trying to get at... more of the "why?" can't you live on a canal. Thanks for this insight, this makes sense.

Also, as mentioned above about Ft Lauderdale, I figured there had to be somewhere on this coast that allowed liveaboards. I'll have to look into Isle of Venice. Also its good to know that single-family zoning is the issue.

I wouldn't mind living in a liveaboard marina to get used to life aboard, but I don't know of any marinas near Sarasota that allow this besides one in Bradenton, which is quite a far commute for me since I work in Sarasota.
