Living on a sailboat in Mexico for free

So I was just watching this video on Youtube.

Here's a couple who sailed there 27 foot Coronado sailboat (a boat you could get for way cheap) down to Mexico and lived down there for years. There base camp ended up being in the Sea Of Cortez near Puerto Escondido. From the looks of it they anchored. So I say screw being a liveaboard in the USA and paying $500-$800 a month for a liveaboard slip. Just go down to Mexico and do it for free. You could probably live down there for years and years.

Re: Living on a sailboat in Mexico for free

depends on where you go--some places in baja now charge to anchor. avoid those places.
there are decent anchorages all along mexicos coast--just know which ones are better for which direction seas and know that in winter swells are mainly from nw and in summer they come mainly from southish.
it doesnt take long to figger it out--bring paper charts and your gps. depth sounder, also.

Location, Location, Location. The access to jobs is generally better in the US. Camping on the water in Baja is not for everyone. If it appeals to you -- go for it.

Re: Living on a sailboat in Mexico for free

Great video. Give me comfort to see it is possible to live aboard a small sailboat. Ours is only 26' and we'll be moving on to her full-time in a few months. Just got to get rid of a few things first. Well maybe a lot of things.

as he is self insured he can go anywhere--the mangroves in barra lagoon are excellent storm protection. the summer high tempo has been closer to 90 than to 100. usually 92, and cloud cover and rain help kleep this place lovely and green. bring skeeter repellant

Re: Living on a sailboat in Mexico for free

I'm in Puerto Escondido right now. There are a lot of boats doing exactly that, and the Sea of Cortez is riddled with coves and towns that you could effectively live in for as long as you like. A lot of people have been on the peninsula (as in sailing / living aboard) for >20 years.

You can also hop across the Sea (1-3 day trip, depending) and end up in a huge town like Mazatlan. Hop back across and you can be in a 50 person fishing village.

It's a beautiful place but not my cup of tea long term. Some love it, and that's good for them. Beautiful scenery, amazing fishing, the best hurricane refuges on the western coast of Mexico. But it is dreadfully hot in the summer, it's quite expensive, and if you can imagine the type of person that would spend twenty years in a desert... well... they can be a little set in their ways.
