jersey flag

All,
I am looking at a Cat, currently in Grenada (where the transaction will take place), that is flagged in the Jersey islands UK.

The owner suggested I keep (and he would help me) the Jersey Flag. There is no sales tax but a yearly nominal fee. I also would have to pay a local agent to do the paperwork.

There are some serious advantages to do this other than tax - the insurance companies charge extra for US Flag boats due to our love of lawsuits and recent storm activity.

Has anybody done this sort of thing? is this a dumb idea?

BTW - the boat will not be in US water.

Your thoughts and insights requested!!!

Re: jersey flag

The Jersey Registry is part of the British Ships Registry. AFAIK there is no annual fee - we pay for 10 years at a time and it’s not much. You don’t have a local (Jersey) agent do the paperwork - they’re only the local contact. It’s a one-off lifetime fee to one of several suitable agencies. You do have to have an eligible citizenship - refer to https://cdn.ports.je/web/JR05-Declar...2f383c25b4.pdf.

For all Jersey Registry information refer to https://www.ports.je/shipsregistry/.

Note that those are the additional eligible citizenships (granted, an eclectic list for sure). Before that you have UK and dependencies, Commonwealth countries, and the countries of the EEC.

Weird that if you want to register directly on the British Ship Registry you have to be a resident of the UK, but to register on that same registry via the Jersey Registrar you can be a citizen of about 50 countries.
