Jerry Cans - Venting?

I've been having issues with jerry cans stored on deck expanding with heat, or sucking in with cold. Is there a vented jerry can available that doesn't leak? My solution so far is to leave the lid "loose" so that vapor under pressure can vent. I will have to tighten them down for sailing or rough weather at anchor, but remembering to do that is the issue.

I'm referring to venting when stored, not when pouring.

congress disallowed that a bit of time ago when they mandated this mess. the old ones were better. goodluck. check thrift stores.

I let them suck in, too bloated and I'll release pressure, but sucked in doesn't bother me.
It's the air space that is expanding and contracting, if really full it seems to be less of a problem,not a cure.
But in the US the CARB won't let you buy a vented can

You can find vented cans online and have them shipped from Canada.

I've never seen vented fuel jugs on-line, but you can buy vents that you can install in the (legally mandated) faulty jugs.

You just drill the correct sized hole and snap them in.

I have a canvas cover I sewed for the gas jerry can I've stored on deck. It helps lots to keep the temperature a bit lower.

Trust an engineer to right to the important point--keeping them out of the sun makes a huge difference.

If they still bloat more than you like (which is harmless, BTW), vent them once, and then let them suck in. You don't want a free vent, gas or diesel.

My builder did a nice thing. A bottom vented locker for gas cans. Nothing else is kept in it, other than 2 gas cans, a siphon hose and a few quarts of oil. As a result, they are out of the sun and do not bulge.

You can make a vent by drilling a half inch hole,then pulling a valve stem into it from the inside. Or, buy a vented can,in many colors,from Jegs or Summit auto parts.

Much has been written about the brilliant folks who passed the CARB laws in the US. I won't beat that horse.

I just want to point out you can buy a spout kit to bring your CARB-compliant plastic fuel jugs up to the safety standards of the old, now-illegal, jugs:


It comes complete with the vent mentioned above, along with two spouts and two different threaded attachments. The two spouts thread together to make one, longer (and larger diameter) spout. This one is better for pouring diesel into deck fittings. There is a similar kit with one smaller spout that's good for filling lawnmowers and such.

Yes, I know the OP was asking about self-venting jugs, but since we went down the path of the flip-up vents, I figured I'd pass along about the spout.

One more thing, if you look you can sometimes still get 6-gallon (around 23 liter) jugs, although many US states have banned them. I don't know what they're afraid we're going to do with that extra gallon.

+1 for the canvas covers. Though for the most part a bit of bloating is harmless. And yeah, thanks CARB. NOT!

Good luck finding vented jerry cans in Canada! I live here and we have the same crappy non vented cans with the even worse pouring spouts!!!

when i saw this thread i thought you were speaking about genuine USA military grade steel jerry cans.

i own 2 of them and have the DONKEY DICK that goes with them.

had 'em for almost 50 years now.

they have tiny vent holes drilled into the cap mating surface towards the edge of the gasket surface.

too bad they don't make 'em like that anymore.


they also float when full.

As mentioned, it is only the airspace that expands and contracts. So keep the airspace minimal, and keep them covered to minimize the effect of the sun, and it should not be an issue.
