Just me... My life, my choices, I never cared much for what others think about my choices. They get to make choices about their life, one shouldn't be greedy.

It is no different ashore. You can wind up with some pretty awful neighbors. At least with a boat it is a lot easier to escape them.

So true. One of the things I like best about living aboard is that if you don't like the neighborhood you can easily move.

Cool Re: What flack do you get for being house less?

Funny paradox how people have gone to the marina to escape "the rat race" yet still try and be "queen of the trailer park" by pointing down on their neighbors who hang their clothes out to dry, have their boat look lived upon, and perhaps even have a bicycle! Seems people will always be bolstering their egos by pointing their finger and calling the others witches to some degree because they hold different values.

Re: What flack do you get for being house less?

I'm 40 and I've never owned a house. The only time I got flak for that was 4-8 years ago when everyone was telling me how great an investment they were and I should buy one....

I don't think people at all equate living in a RV or boat the same as living in your car or van. There are established communities(rv parks, marinas) to support that lifestyle so it's legitimized by society.

Reality time.

Have you ever spoken to an actual liveaboard? In my neighborhood, liveaboards include an attorney, a college professor, a biomedical researcher, a mortgage broker, a cabinet maker, a software developer, a jazz musician, a project manager for a local boatyard, and a number of retirees. I can't think of anyone actively trying to escape a rat race. Some have plans to cruise eventually, some just prefer living on a boat. And it's inconceivable to me that any of these folks would criticize a neighbor for riding a bicycle. Most would probably look down their noses at someone riding a jet ski, but never a bicycle.

Lets not let internet fantasies distort perceptions of the real world.

An interesting list. This causes me to identify my nearby liveaboards. They are a merchant marine captain, two retired teachers, a medical disability funded recuperator, a FEMA mitigator, an eTrader, and a physician, as well as three others of whom I have no vocational knowledge.

not sure if there is a theme developing but my immediate neighbours in chelsea were; UK snowboarder on port side and bbc political commentator on starboard.

mind you, the guy i shared my boat with was basically an unemployed drunken womaniser so it's tough to draw too many conclusions!

Wait! Isn't the point that everyone is here. Afterall, these are the same people that buy food in the grocery store. I might not have a current neighbor that is a unemployed drunken womanizer, but I've known them to be my neighbors too.

Re: What flack do you get for being house less?

In my area the live-aboards are predominantly people who retired (at times quite early) from top jobs, chuck in a musician or a cameraman. There are some hobos too but they come and go and they are hardly ever on their own boats.

Re: What flack do you get for being house less?

i think(therefore i am) sww914 put it in a nutshell,"i like capable people",most of my neighbours living on yachts are, amongst them are an internationally recognised mountaineer,an ex rn officer,a bbc tv producer, numerous classic working boat owners who live onboard their 100 year + vessels and regularly sail them.

not too many low lifes, boat life is too hard for them........a few born agains but they keep to themselves, not to mention teachers and designers who seem inspired by boat life, though not full time.....
