Crazy pricing for Las Olas Marina in Ft Lauderdale
Hi,
I recently docked at this marina and was shocked when I was quoted a price of $3,100 for 1 month’s stay for my 46’ sailboat.
Admittedly I am fairly new to the cruising lifestyle (I’ve owned the boat for several years now) but this price was over 3X the price I paid at Liberty Marina right in New York City!!!
My question to the forum is - is this even remotely what I should have expected to pay for Ft. Lauderdale? After all this is a city run marina and so I expected the pricing to be under the typical going rate for the more high priced/high style marinas in Ft. Lauderdale.
Any input or thoughts appreciated!
Peter

Re: Crazy pricing for Las Olas Marina in Ft Lauderdale
Old Port Cove in West Palm Beach has reasonable nightly rates, but their monthly rates are simply the nightly rate multiplied by 30. No discount for a longer stay.

If I remember correctly, Old Port Cove was $3400 per month for my 47’ sailboat.

Welcome to typical south florida marina rates. Now you know why we work so hard and complain so much about keeping our anchorages free and open!
Yes, this is a typical rate and you will find this rate all the way through the keys, the exception being mooring fields.
There are a few marinas that are slightly cheaper further up the new river (such as Cooley's landing) that are also city run but they often have long waiting lists.

People can only charge what the renters can bear. Obviously there are enough boaters that are able to write the check. Remember "fair" is a medieval carnival.

So, was the marina pretty full, or were there dozens of slips open? I guess I agree with Robert Sailor, it's what the market demands, whether the dock is owned by the city or a private investor.

That's about $2.25/foot/day which about what the market is in Ft. Lauderdale in mid-winter if one wants to be in "heart of the action" which is Las Olas (although why anyone would want to be escapes me entirely). A transient berth further south, not in the heart of the tourist district, would be somewhat less costly tho' not by much. Wrong time of year old sport.

Did someone forget to tell you, you are staying on what is affectionately known as "The Gold Coast" of Floridia? A the heart of one of the most coveted places?

Re: Crazy pricing for Las Olas Marina in Ft Lauderdale
I'm glad I live on the west coast of Florida............
Most of the marinas around here have a daily rate, weekly rate and a monthly rate for transients.
At those rates, you might as well anchor the boat and get a hotel.........

$3,100 each is about what I will be paying on the Royal Princess for a 20 day Caribbean cruise in a balcony cabin. And they include all meals, nightly live entertainment, safe boating, and a maid to make my bed and clean up after me.

Winter rates in effect. Go down considerably in summer but still ridiculous.

Re: Crazy pricing for Las Olas Marina in Ft Lauderdale
Wow!
I pay $310 per month in NC. I have not been as far south in Florida as Lauderdale, and I guess I won't be visiting any south FL marinas. West Palm Beach was nothing like that much. Luckily I have a good anchor and an electric windlass.

I’ve passed this on to my girlfriend to use with her kids. Brilliant!

That’s the market. We generally spend 3 Days a Bahia Mar when returning from the Bahamas just to clean up, relax, have some fun at the pool and reminisce over three decades of lauderdale stories.
After that we boogie north to Loggerhead Marina in Stuart and back to reality :-)
