Great posts and insights and ideas. We,as both liveaboards and sailors, want to get far away from California and will be scouting the marinas and coast this summer.

With a good set of charcoal and oil/water filters you can drink it or run it through an RO system.

The tap water is fine.

The waters of Galveston bay are brackish on the salty side. The bottom is silt so it’s always brown. Major petro chemical industrial complexes are upstream, they’ve been there well before the EPA existed so naturally there are lots of toxins in the water. While not pleasant to think about, and I’d not even consider using this water to boil pasta, there are millions of people who eat the seafood from these waters with no perceivable ill effects.

Please do not equate our saltwater quality here in the bays and estuaries of the Coastal Bend (Corpus Christi area) with the saltwater quality in Galveston Bay system (where I grew up and learned to sail). The Galveston Bay system is still in the early stages of recovery, still threatened by the petrochemical industry after completely dying in the 50's and 60's. We in the Coastal Bend are engaged in a fight for our lives and our livelihood as the same evil profiteers of the same industry attack us. When John Audubon visited the Galveston Bay area in the early 1800s, the water was clear, there was sea grass in the bay and manatees were common. What a difference.
