Controlling Diesel Odor?

I've been on many boats with Diesel smell that I just assumed it was a nasty part of boating life.

One day I was with a surveyor I had hired to survey a prospective purchase and questioned him about. He was a crusty old guy that had been around since the Stone Age and his reply was "You should never smell Diesel, if you do first find the leak, fix it then clean the mess up!"
