Puget Sound to Los Angeles - best months for Motor Yacht

We may be bringing our GB36 down from Anacortes to Ventura in October or, if it is inadvisable, next year. What are the best months to make this journey, harbor hopping or offshore.

I sailed UP from SF to BC in August - September 2016. I had two books with us, Charlie's Charts and the Douglass'. I don't have them anymore 'cuz I borrowed them. Go to a chandlery and read them, they have the answers. My homework showed August has the least wind. Good luck, safe journey.

The weather at this end (south of Point Conception) has been pretty favorable through October, even November and December, these days. I am not sure I'd try it in December though, but I bet you'll find enough windows in October for the whole trip.

In my view October is bit late to start. I think looking for a weather window starting third week of Aug is a good start. This gives you time to pull in and deal with any issues on the boat. If you start late Sept or early Oct and have any layover time for repairs, you end up having to deal with late fall weather systems to finish the trip.

MY is an acronym for Motor Yacht.

Re: Puget Sound to Los Angeles - best months for MY

Statistically August is the best month overall for this trip, particularly in a motor vessel, but that's statistics. And those are based on past climate realities. Last year October was a great month for the trip. Winter was delayed on the west coast and most systems got trapped in the Gulf of Alaska. Northern California had the warmest October on record and zero rainfall the entire month (rain comes with the fall systems rolling in). This year has been a little unusual in the PNW, who knows what October will bring?

If you want to go this October avoid having a schedule (this is true of pretty much any boating venture). Watch the forecasts, go when it's good, hang out someplace when it's not. There are usually a fair number of decent weeks in October/November/December (statistically ), but if you force yourself to move outside those good weeks....

September/October is typically when we have cruisers doing this run back down here to LA after spending summer in the San Juans.
