Re: Yacht Registration in Langkawi?

In 2014 I found a boat to buy in Phuket, but it was much simpler for a non-Thai to do it in Langkawi. The Pippen Marin Office at the RLYC did the paperwork. It took some months to complete the process, but worked fine.

Re: Yacht Registration in Langkawi?

Quick update.... I found a great agency Eden Bay, who handled changing my registration to Langkawi.

No need to go there...just a Deletion Certificate from my SVG registry and they handled all the paperwork.

much cheaper annual fee than the Caribbean flags and no ******** corporate ownership requirements.
Highly recommend Eden Bay

Hi, I did a Google search for Eden Bay Langkawi but found nothing. Can you provide some contact details or suggest how to search them? Thanks

Re: Yacht Registration in Langkawi?

I was given the contact and recommendation from 2 other yacht owners.

Apparently they used to do for Simpson Marine before now starting on their own.

There is no tax for pleasure craft for Malaysia. Maybe that is the incentive.
If a simple transfer of name won't work can you explain how you did it. I am also planning to buy a boat in California and have it moored in Marina Del Rey for at least a year. Since I am also not a US citizen I would face the same problem as you. Is it possible to have it registered as a DMV vehicle in Cal.? Someone said I could DMV register it in Florida. Can you advice if it is better to have it registered in Langkawi as opposed to the US.

Re: Yacht Registration in Langkawi?

Currently looking into this vs Australian registration for our boat as it will not be coming back into Australia once out.
(Yes, we can get it out of Australia without having Australian reg)

What are the advantages disadvantages as an internet search does not bring much up.
Cheaper to buy parts being Malaysia flagged?
Easier to move between there thai, indo, singa waters?
Less hassles and paperwork?

Or are we better off with our one off cost Australian rego?

No real advantages like you mention but is a big help if you buy a boat in a country where you are not a national.

For example, I bought my most recent boat in Japan (I am British National living in Hong Kong). My dilema:
- Can't get Japanese registration as I'm not Japanese national
- British registration means the dreaded VAT
- Hong Kong licence cannot be obtained until the boat is in Hong Kong.

So how do I leave Japan and arrive in Hong Kong?

Answer - LIYR - no natoinality / residency required, neither you or your boat need ever go to Malaysia.

Price is reasonable but there is a significant on-cost if you need MMSI.

Maritime Mobile Service identity.

MMSIs were introduced as part of Digitial Selective Calling (DSC) in the 1999 Safety of Life at Sea convention, an international treaty. An MMSI for a ship station is composed of nine digits. The first few digits form the Maritime Identity Digits (MID), a code for the jurisdiction that registered the vessel and issued the MMSI.

Needed for AIS, DSC, msrine EPIRBs, and the like.

No VAT with British registration until you take it to the UK. Same as for pretty much any other registration other than the few open ones, like Langkawi (Malaysia).

You need an MMSI - it is illegal to operate a ship’s radio station without a MMSI. People do go without a MMSI (our previous owner did so) but you can get in serious trouble in any country with a Coast Guard if you make a radio call and don’t provide a call sign that they can match against a MMSI.

Buying equipment or yearly fee?
Have to have it but I was under the impression there was no ongoing cost.
