Phase 1 Complete

Paid off the boat yesterday and am now debt free, now comes the stuffing all the money I can into a sack and the refit.
I'm going to have a lot of questions about battery charger inverters, folding props, sails etc. I promise to try to do as much due diligence first and search what I can, but please bear with me, I have a lot to learn and really don't want to buy multiples of things until I get the right one.
I value the opinions I get here.
I've got three years, that is when our youngest graduates High School, before we go. I figure to leave any electronics, sails and rigging until the last year to have that stuff as new as possible, but basic things like prop, refrigeration, windlass and chain etc. I'll do now

Congrats! Can you get a folding prop into your full-keel aperture?

IP38 are common boats - looking to other owners for what has worked well is a great strategy.

You can easily, the IP is odd in that the rudder is a spade and not really attached to the keel at all, the strap on the bottom is to keep lines out

I'm toying with a Max-Prop Ecowind, awfully expensive, but if it does what it's supposed to, it would be excellent for motor sailing. My current prop will only allow the engine to rev to 2500 RPM (it's a 3600 RPM motor), anyway it's way over propped, but because of that in light winds it's great for motor sailing as your not turning so many engine RPM's.
I mean to start a thread on the Ecowind as I can find almost no feedback on if it works as advertised or not, got a call into PYI yesterday, but so far they haven't called me back

Congratulations on completing phase one. I greatly admire the way you are moving on your plan. It took us 46 years after getting hooked on sailing to get life, careers, kids, parents and boat ready. And then came grand kids. But, we've been out now for nearly a year and we are loving every minute of it. (Well, unexpected repairs not so much.) Life is good. Grab it while you can.

Just a piece of advice that helped me. I use practical sailor to evaluate a lot of products. Sometimes they are mickey mouse (esp. in the billing dept) but I find them to be a good reference when often no other reference is available. I have subscribed to them now for 6 years.

Three years is a good amount of time to put it all together. You have gotten a bit of a jump by getting a boat that is in good shape to start with. We spent 3 years getting the boat ready to go and it took setting a firm departure date to not spend even more time working on the boat. There is always going to be something to do so you might as well put some stuff off and just go. Staying busy with the boat will make things go more quickly.
Don't sell the plane. Take the wings off and put it away. The price on those things sucks these days. Might as well keep it. You're going to be able to wrangle a small plane when you're old easier than a big sailboat.

Got my first magazine of Practical Sailor just the other day.
Unfortunately I don't have 46 yrs, be nice to have a few I wasted back though.
I'd move aboard, do the work and leave next year, except for the youngest. I still feel guilty with her though, the others had the safety net of being able to come home, she won't.
Unless I can use the hangar as storage space for all the stuff I leave, the airplane has to go, just an economics thing, but maybe I can just keep the hangar rented and use it for storage?
Storage and hanger rental would just be too much. I just don't see how we could get rid of all the fine china and crystal I bought when we were in Germany, and the same for the really nice furniture, photo albums etc., reality is I'm afraid the cruising will be only a part of our life, the last of it I'm afraid I'll spend as an Earth Pig (name Army aviators gave the ground guy's, but seems to work here too)
