our boat(yorktown33) is in the LA area and are looking to take it to the gulf of mexico. (don't know where yet)checked trucking it across(closest place texas)and sailing it around thru panama...cost is about the same from research we have done.trucking couple days, sailing @ about 4-6 months if we do any kinda sightseeing.we're asking our friends in the sailing world to flip the coin for us,,,so truck or sail thanks

My answer on that choice is always the same and generally in the minority. But to me sailing it would be an incredible adventure. This assumes you have the speed under motor required by the canal. I want to boat everywhere I can and I just look at this as the opportunity to see some areas you may never get back to or at best it may be a long time.

Rather than have a boat delivered to us in Fort Lauderdale, we're taking delivery in Washington and exploring Alaska and then the West Coast before making the trip around and home. We've never spent time on the West Coast, land or water. We very much look forward to it.

Oh man, go sailing, you won't regret it. If you need crew please let me know, I haven't been through the canal so the experience would be valuable.

Good luck!

Remember; safety is paramount. It may seem like Boatman61 is a mild mannered crusty old sea captain, but keep using his trademark Comic Sans Ms font and be prepared to see the dark side.
A guy just washed up on shore in the Marshall Islands after drifting 13 months at sea. The name of his boat was hand written in felt pen and it kinda looked like Comic Sans.

Coincidence? Maybe.

Re: confused on what to do???

I'd either sail it or sell it and buy another boat in the Gulf of Mexico.

Re: confused on what to do???

we have made our choice and trucking it across ourself and splash it in new orleans and start enjoying gulf coast right away. we have researched and found it's cheaper to truck it than go thru panama canal. so we plan on getting to gulf of mexico and then make large circle of carb. over next few years until full retirement

Re: confused on what to do???

sail it in winter to south mex, south of which we have had no furycames, only papagayos and tehuantepec gales..then to panama and thru as you find weather to your liking.
hank mckune's creations (yorktown, olympian, etc) were bullet proof, you do have a boat that can stand this job-- do check your mast step..is it tabernackled like most of hank mckune's over 30 ft boats were?? or is it "normal" deck stepped, or is it keel stepped. i know he did install per request of purchasor on commissioning of his boats.
ok so you trucking it.... must have gotten a good price!!!
enjoy your boat in gom. is a fun sailing grounds.
