Love it! To whom do you attribute this witticism?
"Only the guy who isn't rowing has time to rock the boat." ~ Jean-Paul Sartre

It's just something the old trawlerman (older than me anyway) used to say.

Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?
A few quotations on cognitive dissonance, and the backfire effect:
“Faced with a choice between changing one’s mind, and proving there is no need to do so, almost everyone gets busy with the proof.” ~ John K. Galbraith
“The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man, if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man, if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him.” ~ Leo Tolstoy
“Always remember that to argue, and win, is to break down the reality of the person you are arguing against. It is painful to lose your reality, so be kind, even if you are right.” ~ Haruki Murakami

Along that line, one of my favorites is “ Nobody knows what they don’t know.”.

Well then we have to include the full Rumsfeld quote:
Quote:
There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know.

Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?
Well with nothing more to do on a Sunday morning - waiting for the kids to come over for brunch - read the whole thread. Very interesting quotes of all sorts. I will add my own from pro ski patrol days, although it could be utilized by any sailing club worker or crew on a boat with an "unknowing" captain:
We the unwilling,
Led by the unknowing,
Have been doing the impossible for the ungrateful.
We have been doing so much, for so long, with so little, that we are now qualified to do anything with nothing.

It is not what you don't know that gets you into trouble, but what you do know for sure to be true that simply is not so. Mark Twain

know so much that is not so. Mark Twain

Re: What is Your Favorite Quote?
And there's this one, that to me, applies to cruising, although it has wide application. I first encountered it here on CF. The language is coarse, but it's the thought that counts!
Proper planning prevents piss poor performance. The infamous 6 "P's".

And, accurate!
(Even though we are all 100 per cent sure that it’s the other guy who doesn’t know!)
