Sailing Sunglasses
I just came across these sunglasses and they've changed my life. I have nothing to do with the company, it's a small brand, they helped me out big time and the glasses changed my life. I told them I'd put a post up on our forum and they told me I could offer members 20% off by using discount their discount code, "cruisersforum"
www.sternoptics.com is the website, check them out:

Re: Sailing Sunglasses
I never did like straps and I've never had a pair fall off while wearing them (only from my pocket). I do however scratch them, sit on them, throw them in the bottom of a pocket, etc.
My favorite sailing glasses are these bifocals because I don't have to fetch out my readers. I've tried other brands but some of them have a color tint whereas these don't alter colors. Sorry, no 20% discount.

Re: Sailing Sunglasses
I've lost so many pairs of sunglasses that were either blown off, sat on, taken by someone else..etc, etc, I now go to Walmart and buy a half dozen polaroid sunglasses for a hand full of dollars. Problem solved.

Re: Sailing Sunglasses
I wore Seaspecs in the past, but they always felt really cheap. I also have had major eye problems, I don't know if I can fully blame cheap sunglasses although my optometrist certainly does. She's the one that told me about Stern. My eyes have gotten way better ever since I switched. The lenses in the Stern's are way better, the polarized lenses (I know nothing new) iare nuts. I can see stuff in the water that I couldn't in the past, it's like ocean-ray vision.
I don't know this turned into more of a sales pitch than I ever wanted it to be, I just wanted to say I love this company and their glasses, not get into a posting war
Regarding the spelling, I sent them a message and they got right back to me that it was fixed, and um it is! They said to thank @Simi 60!

Re: Sailing Sunglasses
And what’s the lens color that works best on the water?

Hey everyone!
I haven't personally tried these sunglasses, but it's always great to hear about products that can make our sailing experiences even better. Thanks for sharing the info and the discount code!

Re: Sailing Sunglasses
I love Shady Rays for sailing. Price is good for polarized, lightweight, don’t slide. They have a 2 year loss or damage replacement policy, and I can always find some kind of 20% off or more deal.
The fact that they wouldn’t be my first choice for fashion walking around town means that I always have them on the boat!

Re: Sailing Sunglasses
With the way I destroy / lose / go through sunglasses, I just started buying them at the Dollar Tree.

Re: Sailing Sunglasses
The game-changer for me was being introduced to "cheater" safety glasses. They are bifocals, available with zero correction on the top and whatever diopter you need on the bottom. Many tints. The better ones (name brand) are pretty sturdy, and for $12-14 you don't cry when you lose them. They wrap around, so you don't snag on sails, and they stay on or they wouldn't work as safety glasses (I've never had them fall off). Reasonably scratch resistant or they wouldn't work as safety glasses.
I also keep cheap readers on the boat. Single vision.
I like not having to stress about caring for eye wear. If they scratched, who cares, I buy 3 at a time. I also use them driving; it's nice to be able to read the gauges and Ways, and also see ahead.

Re: Sailing Sunglasses
I always recommend to crew and guests that they leave the expensive sunglasses home. Too many opportunities to lose, misplace, drop overboard or otherwise abuse them. Then I have to listen to them whine about how much they cost the rest of the trip.
Treat sunglasses as expendable.
I, too, have bought sunglasses at WalMart and other discount stores, as well as the safety sunglasses at the home improvement stores. Got a really good deal on a batch of them from Amazon once, too.
The only thing I'd caution is to make sure they filter UV A and B. Consider whether or not you want polarized, too. That's great for on the water, but it can make the chartplotter look funny.

Re: Sailing Sunglasses
We've a friend who bought himself a set of the el cheapo reading glasses: +1 through +5 magnification, with cigar tube-like cases. Uses the one that will work best for a given see-to-do-it problem. Add a head lamp for lighting the job, if you wish.
