Best Luxury Upgrades to Add to a 30 Foot Boat?

I'm investing in a better sailing and liveboard experience. This will be hard and not quite true by assume all ships systems are in good order. I'm looking for a list of "options" - things you'd add to a boat such as: Hammock, Sirius XM lifetime subscription, wood stove, memory foam, etc.

What's the one non-essential feature you've added/seen that gives the most added enjoyment?

Open budget, constrained by hull length.

We've really enjoyed our full cockpit enclosure here on the Chesapeake. It really adds another "room" in cold/inclement weather. I wouldn't want one in the tropics, but Northern climes no doubt about it!

Do you already have a watermaker? Ours allows us to stay out away from towns/marinas longer.

Re: Best luxury upgrades to add to a 30 foot boat?

If the question had been - what luxury item do you get the most use out of, it would have been an easy answer.

I replaced my mattress with a complex mix of hard foam , soft foam and memory foam. The end result is a pleasure to lie on, and certainly gets the most use of any item onboard.

I suspect that the one I will like the best is going to be the single line reefing system that I have installed over the winter.

i would love to see someone sailing with a lazy boy recliner in cockpit.......
my 41 came with a cumbersome plush sofa-like set up on lazarette--very comfortable for watch standing.

A good stove with oven... and a decent spill over cold box for fresh foods... my luxury is good food and restaurants piss me off..
I usually turn out better food.. a damn sight cheaper

10 more feet? (J/K)
  1. More Fuel
  2. Larger House Bank
  3. Wind/Solar Power Generation
  4. Watermaker

Re: Best luxury upgrades to add to a 30 foot boat?

1: Great suit of sails, allowing you to use your engine less
2: solar, wind, and/or hydro generation, allowing you to use your engine less
3: Watermaker, allowing you to stay away from marinas and avoid dodgy water in general
4: Depending on area, but if it's too hot, a bimini will do wonders to stay out of the heat.
5: Almost more important than the others, but things that will allow you to enjoy yourself. In my case that is a good stereo, good headphones+mp3 player, ebook reader, and my laptop (where I sail the most, I can make use of my 3G connection, so I rarely feel the need for a wifi extender/booster). If you like playing games, obviously something to do that on, if you like playing instruments, you will want to bring some kind of instrument(s), and so on.

Re: Best luxury upgrades to add to a 30 foot boat?

Good suggestions. Not sure what you already have.

1. Big Rocna/Supreme/Spade anchor with all chain or 50ft+ chain/rope mix and a windlass (critical for good sleep)
2. Dodger and bimini
3. Water heater
4. More electricity ( bigger house bank, bigger alternator, solar)
5. Fridge with freezer section (only if you have plenty of #4)
6. Inverter
7. "Home like" electric macerating head like Raritan Elegance
8. Dinghy on davits (tough on 30 ft boat depending on stern)

2.) memory foam mattress
3.) solar panels / MPPT controller
4.) more anchors

Beyond all the normal stuff for anchoring and sailing distances, I'd say my favorite luxury item added was our midget watermaker. We always had good water to drink without schlepping jugs of drinking water, and a shower at the end of every day is phenomenal!!

Re: Best luxury upgrades to add to a 30 foot boat?

The original poster is looking for luxuries to make life aboard more pleasant so how about a cockpit shower if you don't already have one? It's been a nice thing to have on Tortuga's Lie when we don't want to shower down below.
Air conditioning has also been a nice luxury to have here on the Bay in the heat of the summer!
