Open budget, constrained by hull length.

I'd have to say considering non-essential features our custom latex matress was the single best improvement to a life aboard. Pricey but in our opinion much better than the typical boat mattress with memory foam topper.

Our best overall addition was a radar arch which doubles as dinghy davit/solar panel mount/fishing rod holder, but really now that we've had this I'd consider it essential

Other honorable mentions:

- 12V TV/DVD player with HDMI hookup for laptop.
- Air Conditioning (actualy kinda essential for marina-type liveaboards)

Lots of good suggestions already posted, but I would consider a bunch of them "essential" for our liveaboard style.

woo hoo! I just ordered one.. a bad boy xtreme unleashed for more remote wi-fi.
something else that gets a lot of use is a handheld gps with anchor alarm, helps us sleep.
Neither one will take up much space.

Without knowing what is on your boat already and without knowing what things you enjoy, it's pretty hard to give advice that will be of use to you. I added a 12 volt TV/DVD player and antenna and that could be considered a luxury. I am seriously considering upgrading the mattresses because mine are pretty hard and uncomfortable. Toppers help but I would like a mattress suitable for a home. Of course, it's a two piece V mattress so I can't just go to a furniture store and buy one.

I suppose sheets and blankets that actually fit the V mattress would be nice.

I replaced the carpet with artificial teak and holly. I suppose that's a luxury at nearly $2K.

Oh, I forgot. I bought a Verizon wireless hot spot so I have Internet access from pretty much wherever I am.

YA, Laughing :-) ... We just did that, I think its more of a hudge pain... 20hrs of sailing and your puppy has pissed in every corner, thinks the puppy pads are for laying on, and when we arrive she looks constipated & I have to walk her. Yet my wife loves her... Luxury/Pain, still deciding
