Re: Any Photographers with DSLR's Around ?

There have been up to 4 tallships at once in the anchorage here in Bocas del Toro this week. Ive been too busy working on my boat to get out and get some good pics, but here are some zoomed photos shot from shore.

The pictured ships are Sea Cloud II and Roald Amundsen.

Not very good images, but you can zoom in to see the detail (if TapaTalk doesnt compress them too much...which it did...oh well, the big white one is Sea Cloud II).

Re: Any Photographers with DSLR's Around ?

Can you do astral photography from a small boat? I did a few test shots to answer that question recently. Turns out you can, if its a catamaran anchored in dead calm waters in a well protected anchorage.

These pics got a bit fuzzy on conversion to JPG (from RAW), but illustrate the point. On the first one I did a long exposure (10"), fired the on camera flash to light up the rig briefly, the let the exposure continue to get the stars. Notice there is some streaking of the stars which looks like rotational swirl around the N star, but its centered around the mast. I think that since I shot from near the meta center of the boat (base of mast) that any little motion had more of a rotational effect.

I have managed to get some test shots which have no star streaking, but the image with the rigging in it is more interesting.

The second shot is a moon set, not too bad, but you can see some motion blur in the lights ashore in the distance and the stars.

Don’t have an SLR
For years I’ve been using a LUMIX lx3

High quality digital pocket camera

Good wide angle lense standard

I like it

Technically neither do I. Ive got a Sony a6000, mid range mirroless camera. Except for the abscence of a mirror it is otherwise functionally identical to a DSLR including interchangeable lenses.

There are times, like very low light photography, when the digital view finder gets grainy (where a physical mirror would not), but I expect that technology will improve enough in the near future that actual mirror systems will mostly disappear.

It does the job for me because it’s small enough to fit in a pocket

The lense 24mm-60mm f/2.0-f/2.8 zoom ..is great for onboard fotos
I have a optional viewfinder but I seldom use it

Cool moon sequence. I could probably pull that off from our home base. Ive seen some that were a full lunar cycle shot each day.

Small is good. I have a GoPro that has become my underwater camera of choice. Incredibly small.

Re: Any Photographers with DSLR's Around ?

My gear: The Olympus OMD-EM1 (Mark1). It´s a Micro 4/3 System Camera. Nice and compact. Not eating up too much space while travelling.

Still using the 12-50mm kit lense. Might upgrade to a wide lense soon. The lense has a macro function, which is OK.

Primarily i do underwater photography and once in a while landscape and wildlife.

For underwater pics, i use the OEM Olympus underwater housing combined with two Sea&Sea strobes and a Sea&Sea tray/flexarm system. Just upgraded to a bigger BJ arm System which i will use on my next dives.

Re: Any Photographers with DSLR's Around ?

Recently, at a favorite snorkel site in Bocas del Toro there were a lot of anemone shrimps and pedersons cleaning shrimps out. With their habit of moving a lot, long whispy body parts, and translucent colors, its damn hard to get those little buggers in focus (the GoPro 4 I was using is fixed focus so that doesnt help).

A few pics below taken with GoPro 4 and dome lens. Several species of anemones and and an anemone shrimp in the first one (not a great pic, but an interesting collection of critters). The last one is an upside down jelly fish on his way back to the bottom.Click image for larger version
