Taxes – Should I appeal…

We just got our property tax bill for our mega-yacht… $5.60… good grief, this is an outrage – and due by the 1st of December… should I appeal, or take out a second mortgage… decisions, decisions… and just when I thought my blood-pressure was under control…

Seems outrageous. Retain an attorney at $450 per hour to fight this blatant abuse of governmental power. :-)

Larry,

I used to live in Lancaster County, Virginia, about an hour or so down the road from you. Our personal property tax rate there was 1.4%, as I recall. If Westmoreland County is the same, your boat was assessed as being worth only $400.

That is OBVIOUSLY a gross understatement of the true value of your fine vessel. I suggest that you contact the Commissioner of the Revenue posthaste to come out and re-assess "Angel Wings" so that she's not insulted by that piddley valuation.

Since the cost of sending out one business letter or bill was over $5 ten years ago, and the cost of processing the revenue payment is even higher, I would suggest calling for an investigation into the intentional waste of government funds, sending out a $5.60 bill that will cost at least $10 to process, for a new LOSS of $4.40 to your tax department.

They need to itemize the billing and processing fees, and then suspend all tax charges when the amount of the receipts will be less than the cost of the process. Or, give you the option to pay for two years at once (with credit for interest) so that at least they will make more than they spend when they mail out a bill.

That's just plain bad government. No wonder the country is in trouble, the tax department never learned basic business!

Be a good Democrat and show the government their error and voluntarily send in the correct amount. It's all about CHANGE

Frame it and hang it on your wall as an illustration of government waste and stupidity.

Send a letter to the editor so as to embarrass them as well. Maybe someone will get a clue and not send out tax bills for such trivial amounts.
