Does anyone recognize this documentation?

Hi all, I have a 1975 Sea Tiger (Formosa) 41. There is this number and gross tonnage carved into the trim in the forward cabin and I can’t figure it out. I have never seen a USCG documentation with a hyphen and I can’t match it up on USCG with or without it. The boat is California state registered and that doesn’t match either.Perhaps someone here recognizes this numbering system and can help me out.
Much appreciated,
Tim

Re: Does anyone recognize this documentation?

Is it maybe a previous state registration number? One from 1976, perhaps? I’m just guessing in the dark here.

Re: Does anyone recognize this documentation?

They might be European (pre-CE) registration numbers if the boat was ever there.

Re: Does anyone recognize this documentation?

Thank you for the replies so far. The boat has been in the same marina since the early ‘80’s but not sure where it was before that. I can’t match it up with anything Canadian either. This one has me stumped.

Looks like a " documentation " number to me. These are required for US documentation to be inscribed in manner that they can't be removed or tampered with. The gross tonnage may have been an earlier requirement.

Re: Does anyone recognize this documentation?

For boats that transit the Panama Canal, the gross tonnage is required, and that may have been added to provide that.

Re: Does anyone recognize this documentation?

Hi MicHughV, I am aware that the USCG requires the documentation number to be displayed such as this one is. The problem is that it does not appear to be a USCG number. USCG seems to follow the format of 7 digits with no spacing or hyphens, this number has only 6 and includes a hyphen. I am trying to learn if it is an old format, a state format or perhaps a number from documentation in a country other than the USA. Thank you for your reply,
Tim

Re: Does anyone recognize this documentation?

I'm going to go out on a limb here with a wild guess.

Could it pertain to the boat itself, in some kind of code...where each number represents something....number of masts, LOA, draft, beam, stuff like that ???

Re: Does anyone recognize this documentation?

I believe this is the Hull Number ie manufacturers number and ? Year of make
The documentation number should also be somewhere IF it was documented to start with

Re: Does anyone recognize this documentation?

Current Documentation numbers are 7 digits. They are issued in order, and in the mid-70's they were issuing numbers in the 600,000 - 700,00 range.

As far as I know, boats are never re-issued new documentation numbers by the USCG, so I'll go with thuis is a number from some other country where the boat was initially registered. When you bought the boat someone should have done a title search for you... that should have included the history of ownership from the USCG records if any, or at least the state title history.

This is not is a format of any number I have seen, certainly not a HIN or any state registration.

Re: Does anyone recognize this documentation?

Back in the late 70' I built my own boat. When it came time to register it, a guy from the State agency came to look at it to verify that it was indeed homemade and not stolen, etc.
He issued me a hull number which I was to place on the boat in a "permanent" manner so that it could not be removed or tampered with, which makes me wonder if this is not a similar thing ??? This had nothing to do with State registration or USCG documentation numbers...I seem to recall that there were some letters of the alphabet mixed in there though....

Running out of ideas here.... ???
