Wrench for cockpit fitting

What wrench or other tool do you use to hold this fitting while you remove the nuts? I have the wrench for removing the through hull fitting that has the small tabs in the opening.

Re: Wrench for cockpit fitting

Big washer laid on edge and held by vise grips, but maybe a deck fitting key would work?

Plastic. The large washer, perhaps ground square to make it grip the slots, or a rectangular piece of steel ground to fit should, as a64pilot suggests, work. If not, drilling two holes in it that match a deck wrench would give you more torque, and if all else fails, you cut it off inside the hull and replace it. Or, you drill it out with the right size Silver & Deming bit.

It's all a matter of how big a hammer.....

Two slot-type screwdrivers pried against each other.

Re: Wrench for cockpit fitting

That looks like a cockpit drain. The bottom of it should have a hose, and it should drain to outside the boat. "Unscrewing" it without knowing where it goes is probably not so good an idea. If you need to remove it, for some reason, undo the hose first.

You got it! Cockpit drain. The hoses weren't installed correctly. The boat is out of the water. I've cut out the hoses. Need to remove cockpit drains and replace.....need to remove through hulls and replace.

Sailing season's over. Its work on the boat season.

Re: Wrench for cockpit fitting

Trust me, I’ve done it, a large washer turned on edge will hold it, just lock the washer into a pair of vise grips to hold it.
However most likely you won’t need to hold it, I bet it was installed with 5200, and won’t move.

The large washer is the slick solution. It wasn't installed with 5200. I tried to remove the nut without something holding the top end and the entire fitting turned freely. Since its a cockpit fitting the manufacturer may never had used bedding material.

A large pair of vice grips to keep the nut from turning and two crossed, large slotted screwdrivers is what I usually use. Or, if you don't want to use it again, a multimaster type tool to cut the nut off.

Re: Wrench for cockpit fitting

If you have access to the nut on the bottom, just hold the tail with a pair of channel lock pliers and then undo the nut! That way it only takes one person to do.

Re: Wrench for cockpit fitting

Take the big nut off the back side under deck first. Either way someone will have to hold one side. Then you can get it out readily.

Re: Wrench for cockpit fitting

Cut the nut with an angle grinder or Fein and replace the whole thing.
