Through hull sealant that can go in water before cured

Guess who snapped of the head water intake valve handle?... I will need to hang in the slings and replace the valve and probably the thru-hull as I'm guessing the set up is 44 years old. Is there a sealant I can use that will be able to splash in a few hours and still cure fully under water. Thanx in advance.

I believe that most of the polyurethane sealants will cure underwater...

Thanx everyone...but real men don't need a head...just a bucket overboard. But it is a bummer living alone on a boat because of it...

Get the fast-cure version of 5200.

Hmm... turns out that you are correct! The quoted cure time before immersion is a week! Yet have we all not gooped up a fitting with such sealants and then splashed the boat within a day or so? I certainly have, and not noted any failures nor lack of complete ciuring when later disassembling the fitting.

None the less, I stand corrected and thank you for the heads-up.

Jim

PS: Forgot to add that I mostly now use Fixtech 15 which has similar properties to Sika 291 and does indeed cure underwater.

If you use 5200, it will never come off. I would use BoatLife Life Caulk.

It you really want it to seal well and not leak for many years, like where the chain plates come through the deck, use 5200. It won't be easy, but it will come off with the right tools. 5200 also really great shear strength.

Re: Through hull sealant that can go in water before cured

Jim you are so right, I have used Sikaflex to install plenty of skin fittings. Often while the boat is hanging in the slings and then straight back in the water. Never had an issue or else I would have looked for another sealant. I suppose that's why all those words are on the back of the tube, one of these days I will get around to reading them.
Cheers
