Thanks Paul. Yes, the steering felt a bit stiff and not completely smooth running when I picked up the
boat. I didn't think much of it but will definitely pay more attention if I run into this again, given how quickly it broke.
Yes, the
emergency tiller worked. I always check this as part of my own boat inventory on checkout, since I want to make sure that will
work if needed. I've encountered tillers that don't fit the boat in the past, so always good to check.
Steered initially with
sails, then tiller and
autopilot once things were under control.
Happened on the lee side of Mayreau in the Grenadines, just south of
Salt Whistle Bay. We were headed out to the
Tobago Cayes to
anchor overnight but ended up
anchoring in Troisant Bay instead (between
Salt Whistle and Saline).
Charter company had a
engineer subcontractor out the next morning. He replaced the cable portion with a
rope line. We didn't have any
Dyneema on board. He had a bit of trouble tensioning the line and two days later it failed again (rope came off the pulley I think).
