Re: South Florida boats - How often are you cleaning your bottom / painting?

If you don’t use your boat much then Use a hard paint. If you use and move it a lot then go ablative. Just make sure that your diver knows what you have as the cleaning method is different between the two types of paints.

What's the drawback of a hard paint?

Hard paints do not wear away like ablatives, so the coating thickness builds up over successive paint jobs and eventually needs to be completely removed. Also, hard paints cannot withstand prolonged exposure to air making them unsuitable for boats that spend more than a few days on the hard.

Interesting. Seems like a winner for me. I'll have to keep that in mind.

You're a pro and I've seen your posts on my research. What are you thoughts on monthly/bi monthly cleanings on coating longevity?

Relatively frequent (and therefore gentle) cleanings are much better for any anti fouling paint than less frequent (and therefore more abrasive) cleanings. I have to laugh at all the boating Einsteins that tell you not to clean the bottom often. They are completely oblivious to the fact that going longer between cleanings allows the bottom to become more foul, thereby requiring more aggressive tactics when the hull is eventually cleaned.

Why would I go first? It's your claim. And you can't even name the product on your own boat

Micron ultra. Many of the hard paints will need attention if out of the water for more than a few days. This could be a pressure washing or scuff sand with 220 grit.

So yes they are not totally hands off but hundreds of boats haul out every year with hard paints and dont need to recoat at the next launch.

For those reading at home… do your homework.

I think you'll find that they need more than a pressure washing. BTW- Ultra is not part of the Interlux Micron line of products.

Trinidad HD indicates on their data sheet you can paint up to 60 days before launching.

That's not what we are talking about. We're taking about hauling a boat somewhere down the line after it has been splashed with new paint and in the case of Trinidad, you can take the boat out of the water for a maximum of three days before you need to repaint.

I wonder how bottom paint can tell time and know how many days it has been.
