Rudder total rebuild 22 columbia

Hi ive just got myself into (80s) 22 foot columbia sailboat with a broken rudder. I need help on design and building a new one around the old post. Anyone with helpful information? Also has anyone moved the outboard power to the exterior. If so id love more info.

I presume this is your Columbia 22?

Why don't you use your broken rudder as a pattern? I'm quite certain when you prise off the old wood/fiberglass/foam? rudder you will find a rudder post with tang(s). If that is the case make up a new rudder using marine grade ply and epoxy glue. Then lay up 2 ( or 3) layers of fine woven roving glass using epoxy resin.

In the plan above it shows an outboard well. If you are going to hang it off the transom you'll have to reinforce the transom with ply and epoxy. Then you'll have to watch out the o/b leg doesn't foul the rudder. ( But some of them apparently had a transom mounted o/b) The picture at the very top has a transom mounted o/b)

Re: Rudder total rebuild 22 columbia

Is the post truly true? If the rather exposed rudder was destroyed by impact, I'd want to check run out at the bottom of the shaft, because a bent shaft may create problems in the future.

That said, Coopec43 is right on. If you have already tossed the wreakage, is there another boat nearby that could serve as a pattern?

Thank you so much fir the reply. Photo is helpful. Old rudder was handed to me upon purchase. Only the post remains looks straight accept for hockey stick curve on the end. Also the brass mount at deck level was drilled out. So im looking for a pattern ot sizing to help me out.

If you had the dimension from the corner of the transom to the center of the shaft hole, the basic dimensions of rest of the blade might be reverse engineered from this pic or the second line drawing above. If you would like I could take a whack at it. If you use a CAD software like AutoCAD, an image can be inserted and scaled to match a known reference dimension (I would use LWL). Once scaled world-sized, the other dimensions can be taken with reasonable accuracy, provided the photo is not distorted too much in length or width.

The gent at Boatworks Today did a series on rebuilding a foam-cored rudder.
My stuff is all laminated plywood so I have not gone that far yet.
There is also a Yahoo group specifically for that boat.
All the best!
