Re: Removing tape after multiple varnish layers

When I'm using epoxy and blue tape, I remove that tape after an hour, when the epoxy stops being runny, but before it is hard.

Re: Removing tape after multiple varnish layers

Agree with previous posters best option is to pull tape as soon as possible. Last year I had the pleasure of watching a pro paint and caulk in my house, he would tape/paint/pull - same deal for caulk which made perfect caulk lines every time. I now buy 10 rolls at a time, and do the same, it’s done wonders for all my boat work.

Re: Removing tape after multiple varnish layers

I had a friend make a good suggestion on removing tape when varnishing. He suggests removing one step, small section to see if it comes up easily between each coat. If is difficult, then remove all the tape and reapply. If it is, continue with the additional coat.

I tried this method and it worked for me. I am using a varnish that can be reapplied in 5 to 6 hours. I took a few days and applied 6 coats of varnish, testing between coats.

Re: Removing tape after multiple varnish layers

Not varnishing the deck, just the teak on the sides, a couple of boxes, cockpit doors, etc
