low water drain lines

Just bought a 26' South Coast sailboat and when looking at the sink drain line it has 2 big loops in it that create low spots it there a reason for this or can I rework this drain so there is not water sitting in the line. The way its ran right now its kind of acting like a trap.
Thanks
Jeff

Re: low water drain lines

Hi Jeff and welcome to the forum.

Answer, depends. How low is the bottom of the sink compared to the waterline of the boat? Will the bottom of the sink be below the waterline when the boat it heels over on one tack or the other?

The loops could be just a lazy installation and you could remove the loops OR could be because the space is limited and the hose would kink without the loop or could be to keep water from pushing back up into the sink when the boat is sailing or some other reason I can't think of or no reason at all.

Worst case scenario, remove the loops and try it out. If you discover some problem with that, put another piece of hose in and restore the loops.

Just make sure the sink doesn't fill up and sink the boat when you're testing it.

Thanks for the quick response not sure what I'll do might just leave it for now and deal with it next winter as long as its not hurting anything. On kind of a parallel issue the water tank on this boat has not been used in years any recommendations on how to sanitize it before using it.

What's your tank made of?

Greetings and welcome aboard the CF, Cruiser.

The icebox on the Southcoast 26A is at the extreme outboard edge.

Re: low water drain lines

Hi Jeff,

For sanitizing the water tank just good old beach does the job. Get plain bleach and not one of the scented, deodorized, no splash or other fancy varieties.

I forget the exact ratio but it is a cup of bleach per XX gallons of water, maybe 20 or 50 gallons. A search on the forum should turn that up.

Partially fill the tank, add the bleach, finish filling tank so the bleach is mixed. Then turn on all the faucets until the bleach/water comes out. Then let it sit for a while to do it's work.

If you have aluminum water tanks don't put too much or let it sit too long as the bleach is corrosive to metals.

Very good point!
The sink is at the opposite outboard side; which sometimes causes backflooding, when deeply heeled.
