KnottyBuoyz III - The Project Update

After careful review of our present and future financial plans we've decided (89%) to delay the construction of our little trawler project for one more year. This will take a lot of pressure off of us as we've planned to build "out of pocket". Starting a year later means we won't "have" to sell our current boat. The downside is, things get more expensive every day. I've updated our project estimate and the worse case scenario has grown by $7K in 6 months.

Rick, are your figures for the 28' or 32'? By the way, exchange rate is now 1.06.

The basic design is 28' and we're dealing with the designer to stretch it 30" in length leaving the beam the same. The 32 probably comes from my previous 32' steel trawler project that got canned because of cost. Exchange rates fluctuate. I'll probably miss out on the higher rate when I'm ready to buy. Murphy's law.

We picked up 4 Lewmar portlights off of e-Bay. Item #230111692976 for $59US each. West Marine lists similar size for $240US. Have been scanning e-Bay looking for stuff we'll need that are bargains when we stumbled across these. They're good quality. They've got 6 left and started with 100 a couple of months ago.

Do these need to be a solid shaft or is pipe ok?

Boat is a single diesel trawler, 40-50HP, 11,000 lbs.

Rudder will be NACA0012 profile, foam core composite. Inner structure will be 19.4oz per sq yd SAERMAX multiaxial carbon fiber and outer 1708 Biaxial F/G.

Heavily leaning towards bootlegging a design for an articulated rudder which might put a little more stress on the rudder post. Would a 1-1/4" 316L Sched 80 pipe work?

I would go solid shaft on that one, the price is not that much different. The ratio between the rudder & shaft is too extreme . And hopefully it's supported at the base as well. If you were to go 2" SS pipe (2.5 OD) then I would think it OK. If the width were OK? But I'm no engineer either, just my opinion.

BTW My portlights came in yesterday. They'll work good!!

I'm going to use a solid shaft for the upper portion above the flange and into the boat. New drawing attached.

I think the foil shape will only be about 2-1/4" at the widest part. Gotta check that. The articulated rudder can be support on the top and bottom and there's 2 attaching points each. The pictures I could find don't illustrate that very well and I can't seem to get AutoCad to draw a foil shape very well so I'm at a loss to be able to draw it myself.
