Bottom paint is changing color after it dries

Applying Pettit odyssey 60 over clean and solid WM CPP paint. Both red.

As the paint is drying, it is changing color to black/dark grey.

Very strange! Wondering why this is happening, and if I should finish it. I was just touching up some spots and noticed it.

There does not appear to be any lifting or other apparent issue. If this is purely cosmetic, thats fine. I don't want a disaster on my hands!

Re: Bottom paint is changing color after it dries

Mystery MAY be solved..

It JUST MAY be the (god awful) color. It is drying the same color (or close to it) on the mixing blade.. Just about brown.

2 coats makes it a brown color, 1 coat is grey

Just may be a very dark red, compared to the bright red of the WM paint, just may showing the contrast.

Funny, it went on red-red, and went grey/brown as it dried.

It is an aweful color, but if it performs well, I can live with it. It got good reviews, and it is expensive. will see how it works this year, and if it is worth almost 2-3x the price of the CPP (which I can get 2 seasons on per application of 2 coats) which performs admirably. Better than I expected, TBH.

I was more worried about paint interaction.

over an hour later, it has dried and no indication of peeling or any negative affect. Well, other than the terrible color!

Re: Bottom paint is changing color after it dries

You may be seeing the heavy chemicals sink to the bottom of your application as part of the intended curing process? Which I think would be good as it would put the heavy concentration close to the exposed surface. Does this make any sense to you?

I am an art school grad, I have worked with a lot of different paint. Paint does go on a different shade than it dries in almost every medium (acrylic, oil, water, color, guache’)
Sometimes the wet paint reflects a color close to it and mixes its self to appear as a completely different color.
I painted a living room ceiling white and cleaned up and put all the furniture back, when the home owner saw the finished product she was angry at me, she said why did you paint my ceiling a shade light shade of green.
I explained respectfully, the sun is coming thru your skylight and is reflecting the green carpet onto your ceiling. She looked at me side ways and walked away. A short time later the sun changed its angle and clouds had filled in. I was working on finishing another room I had painted and I heard a gasp from the living room. The home owner had seen the magical transformation of the ceiling to the color she had selected, we had a good laugh then.

Cheers

I get it.. happens all the time. Even a day later, at best, it is brown. The color is less important than any potential interaction, which is what i initially thought. After it dried on the can and mixer, i was relieved it was likely just the color.

I took the risk and went for it. 2 coats/2 gallons. Wow that is a lot of brown! With the slightest kiss of red. Anyone would call it brown.

If it performs well, i won't care. Stuff isn't cheap! I can live with the color if it does a good job. But it ain't red!

I think your hull makes it look better, nice job, beautiful boat from what we can see.

Thanks, it is easy to keep up with the bottom if you don't let too much paint accumulate. I try to keep 2 coats on for 2-3 seasons, boat yard power washes it each season, helps keep the thickness thin (yes flushing $ down the drain) but keeps the surface smooth and easy to paint!

Will see how this paint does, as it is pretty expensive. After years of using cheap bottom paint, with varying degrees of success, figured I would try this, as it has some decent reviews from Practical Sailor.

Funny, it initially dried grey, then turned brown.

it is a lot of upkeep staying ahead of repairs on a 1968 boat, but worth it!
