What size electric lift pump

Hi guys

I am converting my Ally water tank to a diesel tank but it sits about 70cm below the engines lift pump which is rated to maximum 50cm so need to install a electric lift pump. I am all googled out and cant figure out what size to get or what type/brand. It seems that the Facet brand is the most popular over here. The engine is a Nanni 3.3 ( 29hp) any help or direction to usefull articles appreciated.

Not sure what's available there, but pretty much anything will work... Feeding the engine lift pump with any pressure from an electric will negate the lift pump "lift" capacity number...

Hi Don,

Do you know if this type of pump runs continuously or switches off when it reaches the cut-off pressure?

You'd be hard pressed to find one too small. An engine like that will probably run on a fast drip!

This is a diaphragm pump. When you first turn it on, it will go clickety-click until it builds up pressure, then it turns off. If you can hear it when the engine is running (unlikely), it will click occasionally as the fuel is used up. If you don't need the boost, you can turn it off and still run the engine--the lift pump will pull the fuel through it when it is off.

Jim, I'm finishing up six weeks of work on the Grand Banks 42, my gift to the owner who lent it to me for 2 years. I think I'll stick to OP (other people's) boats for a while.

Run them off the ignition switch, no reason it can't run all the time.

I emailed Walbro asking them which pump to fit. They replied quickly and I brought the on they recommended, fitted it and have had no problems since.

Do keep in mind that they use a sealing thread so it's best to buy hose tails with the pump.

I went through two cheap electric pumps before buying the Walbro. The last one was pouring diesel into the bilge and making the engine hard to start.

I wired the pump up with it's own switch and fuse. Only ever use it for starting and if the fuel is under any sort of pressure I don't even need it for that.

I use a cheap $35 Facet pump as a transfer pump between my aux. tank and my main tank on my truck. The engine is chipped and puts out over 1,000 lb-ft of torque. Even while towing my 21,000 lb trailer, the Facet pump will exceed the fuel demands of the engine and refill the main tank while driving, even uphill.

So as everyone above said, pretty much any small pump will do, probably the smaller the better. Be careful not to run the pump against a closed valve. I did that once and burned it up before I realized what I had done. I replaced the ball valve with an electric solenoid so I didn't siphon fuel, but it would open when the pump was operating.
