Spraying Down the Engine

Please share some thoughts about periodically spraying the inboard diesel engine with a product such as WD40 or T9.
Does it help prolong the paint and stop rust? What about odor or fumes when the engine is running and hot?

Can't hurt. The 'WD' in WD40 supposedly stands for 'water displacing' and does seem to keep the rustermites away on my tools if I remember to spray them down with it. Boeshield, etc have a wax additive that remains on the steel further protecting the surface. Might cause a buildup of crud if/when it gets mixed with dust. Still, only a cosmetic problem that may require occasional washdowns with a grease cutting solution and recoating.

We make our own, diesel and outboard oil 80/20 respectively. Works a treat. Outboard oil TCW3 has good adhesive properties.
Will keep things shiny for a long time and prevent corrosion. The solvents in some products, and the propellents play havoc with hoses and some seals.

I do that when I winterize, it does smoke a little in spring start up. I don't routinely do it during the year.

I have used mineral spirits to periodically clean the engine.

I buy WD by the gallon for just that purpose... even the car engines get it

I liked the Quicksilver (Mercury) Corrosion Guard stuff in a can. Sprayed on like WD40 but dries to a wax finish to protect. Since I don't use much I don't mind paying the price for a can if we can't get any at work.

I prefer fluid film. It is a lanolin based product.

Cleaning, de-greaseing, and washing the engine and engine room is a job I do every time I make a ancorage for a day or two! That of course depends on the running time on the engine on the trip we just finished. If it was only an hour or two I wont clean it this time !Its just one of the things Ive always done at anchor, some say its a bad habit but it works for me !! and keeps me busy LOL

WD 40 is not recommended for this purpose, it will degrade rubber and plastic products. Silicone spray will protect better and cause less damage.
