Hurth Transmission Identification

I have a 1995 Beneteau Oceanis 400 with a Perkins M50 mated up to a Hurth Transmision. The ID Plate is completely illegiable. I am assuming that this is the original tranny but I've been wrong before. And I am also assuming its in the HBW series. Does anyone have any direct knowledge about what would have been the OEM tranny for this boat? Additionally does anyone one have any knowledge or experience replacing this tranny with another Hurst HBW series or later model ZF say the ZF 10 or ZF 12 or another manufactures tranny? Any info would be greatly appreciated. If there is an earlier thread that relates to this post post that is still up on the site and you can point me in that direction that wouls also be a great help.

Hi, I had a hurth 150 that was slipping, for a few dollars over the rebuild cost replaced it with a PRM, about 50mm longer and somewhat stronger.

Thanks for your reply. The link that I included in my reply to GordMay significantly narrows down what Hurth tranny it is/might be. So now I'm looking at what trannys are out there that may work as non-Hurth/ZF replacements. In that link the twin disc MG360 comes up as a direct bolt in replacement and I will look into that as well as the PRM. The 50mm may be a problem. Thanks very much

It looks a bit like that’s a down angle gearbox so it would be either a ZF 15MA or a
ZF 25 MA. These both have a Hurth identity so HBW 150MA and HBW 250MA. Because there are 3 different HP ratings for the Perkins Perama engine there were also at least 3 different Hurth gears, the 150, the 250 and for the turbo engine the ZF30 with the same clutch plates as the 250 but 2 more plates on fwd and reverse.

Thanks Skipperpete, it's a straight shaft, may just look like it's downangle because of the angle the photos were taken. And from all I have read and your reply it would be a HBW 150M. If I didn't mention it prior I will now, the ID Plate that's on this tranny is completely obliterated which is the why for the original post. What would really be the final piece of the puzzle is if someone has one of these installed in their Oceanis 400 of around a 1995 vintage would be a photo of the ID Plate on their tranny. Trying to get an idea of the ratio which is printed on that plate. Thanks very much Peter

That is either a Hurth HBW 125 ( Now ZF 12M) , or a Hurth HBW 10, or a Hurth HBW 150 (Now ZF 15M). The case was the same for all of these models. The seal and clutch kits are also the same. They all came with different reduction ratios. If you can figure the forward reduction ratio you can better ID the transmission.

At this point I'm assuming that it's an HBW 150M. It would in theory be the correct match for a 50 HP Diesel.
