Engines: Old and easy to repair vs New and reliable.

We've got a 40 year old Perkins 4-108 with about 3,300 hours on it. Starts up every time in about 2 seconds and runs very smooth and pretty quiet. I've had to replace the engine water pump, water pump">raw water pump, starter and rear main oil seal (big and PITA job, but stopped the bad oil leak). We run this engine at about 1,850 rpms all day long when necessary. It allways runs at 55 lbs. oil pressure and 175 degrees temp. Also replaced the heat exchanger and exhaust elbow. Other than that just basic, normal maintenance. I love my old Perkins 4-108. [emoji4] Oh... and we burn about two thirds of a gal. of diesel per hour at cruising speed, which pushes our 21,000 lb. sailboat at about 6 knots. Guess I'm an old guy who loves the old engines.
