Diesel capacity/range

what capacity (gallons) is your tankage for more than day sailing? My 30 ft Cape Dory has a 20 gallons diesel capacity, which is fine for day/weekend. On longer passages is not. Curious about what other sailors consider their minimum? to deal with calms, etc. The question takes into consideration the usual, is a sailboat, you use your sails, etc.

Re: Diesel capacity/range

My tank is just shy of 60 gallons. She burns maybe 3/4 of a gallon/hr as long as I keep the RPMs modest. This moves us along at about 6 knots. So the math works out to a range of around 500 nm.

This has been fine for me so far.

============================================== thank you Mike was thinking about those lines. Have been carrying extra on 6 jugs,3 on each side, which gives me about 50 with a total 45 usable, however is now becoming a safety issue with my increasing balance "issue" to move forward and those jugs on my way. Will add a bladder on the deck and trying to estimate the maximum weight tolerable. I burn about the same 3/4 an hour. Thank you again

Re: Diesel capacity/range

We are living aboard on a Bruce Roberts steel sloop and very happy for the builders idea to have enough capacity: 250 gallons in two different tanks. Independence and no need to stack jerry cans on deck. Using diesel in 75 hp engine and heating when needed. Bunkering fuel where it is cheapest, easiest, and safest.

Re: Diesel capacity/range

On my Tayana 42 I have two tanks totaling 130 gallons. I burn about 3/4 gallon per hour with a 44 hp Yanmar running at around 2500rpm. If I did the math right that give me a range of just over 1,000nm.

Jeanneau 41ds Yanmar 3JH5E 40hp 55gal tank 4/5 gal/hr @ 6.5 knots. Good for my area. If I ever do the Bahaha or go up to the NW/Alaska planning on a 45gal bladder on deck for total 100g. That is about 370lbs which the deck can handle and not worried about the top wt with a boat this big.

Re: Diesel capacity/range

Our fuel tank capacity is 20 US gals (~68 litres).

We have a 3 cyl Yanmar 3GM (27 hp) with 750 hrs that uses a third of a US gal/hr (1.35 litres/hr) on average at about 5 knots.

We assume a total range when motoring of approx 200 nm per fill (with a large contingency).

If we plan to travel we keep an additional 6 US gal (23 litre) tank of diesel on deck.

Re: Diesel capacity/range

300 litres ( 80 US gallons) . If necassary we carry up to 6 x 20l jerrycans on passage as reserve.

300 litres is good for about 400NM in calmish condiitons or 500NM if we slow down a it
The extra 120 litres would make it up to 1000 NM if we slowed right down to the most economical speed.

Of course, motoring into heavy weather those numbers would be a lot less.

Re: Diesel capacity/range

We have a 32 foot yacht with a Yanmar 2GMF and carry 200 litres of diesel in one stainless steel tank. Two reasons we have a 200 litre tank. The first one is the tank was very very cheap when we were building the yacht. The other reason is I have had a number of clients cruise with small diesel tanks and that whole chore of having to top a tank regularly from another container just sounds like a hassle.
Cheers

Re: Diesel capacity/range

we can carry up to 750L (3 x 250L tanks). have 2 x 4JH2TE yanmars which burn abt 4LPH (rarely run both simultaneously)

how much we choose to carry is dependent on a lot of things - price, when & where next fuel will be, ease of filling. try not to carry more than we have to because of the weight but rarely have less than 250L onboard.

this would give us say 350-375nm as a minimum and up to 1100nm if we are full.

cheers,

Re: Diesel capacity/range

I added tanks to my cat, then emptied them and never used them again. It depends on where you intend to go really. Mexico or the Caribe? You dont need that much. Cross the S Pacific? yeah get some.

Have you considered adding another tank? There are plenty of stock plastic sizes available or aluminum too. I bought the ones I added to the cat from West Marine.
Maybe another 20 gallons under the V berth? You only have to fill it before a longer trip.
So... your range right now is maybe 250 miles?

Re: Diesel capacity/range

Our Catalina 470 has three tanks. 2 x 44 and one 56 gallon. My Yanmar with nearly 5000 hours on her is a 4Jh3-TE and burns roughly 0.8 gpf at crusing RPM of 2400.

Re: Diesel capacity/range

I reckon for distance cruising, you need about a 500 nm range at a minimum
