Re: Bracket for 25hp outboard on yacht?

There are quite a few problems having an outboard on that stern of yours.

Number one is starting.

How will your start the outboard hanging on the ladder or reaching over.

Then throttle control.

You may need a unique sliding bracket or something.

I can raise may outboard for easy starting, checking the oil, etc. or removal.

Looks like your outboard will be hard to reach if it is low enough not to continually come out of the water.

The OB isn't (currently) intended for permanent use, as Justin plans to get the Bukh running, so many easier -- even jurry-rigged solutions can be appropriate in the short run.

For example: "Then throttle control."

At least that one's very easy. A piece of PVC pipe that just fits (can be either too loose or too tight) a couple of saw cuts to make a chuck of sorts and a couple of hose clamps and you've got a perfect tiller extension, any length you like.

Similarly, don't forget to put the kill switch on a long lanyard.

Listening to an outboard cavitating for hours and hours is not good for your mental health lol

Yes, that's right. For now this is just to make one three day journey to get the yacht to its new mooring where either the Bukh engine is to be restored or a more permanent solution on the outboard idea. As yet unsure as it depends greatly on the findings when dismantling/problem solving on the Bukh.

The Bukh has been sadly neglected for many years before I bought the yacht, and since rebuilding the head I find that there are far more issues to be addressed. Right now, where it is moored it is very hard to work on the Bukh but the new mooring is on a pontoon and a freshwater canal.

Where I live it quite hard to find useful outboards. Most are on fishing boats.

That's good that it doesn't have to be a permanent solution.

Still, you might want to really think over where you are going to mount the bracket.

The reason I have an outboard is because my 1974 Bukh 10 blew a head gasket. It also leaked oil terribly. I found this out the first couple days. The gear box also jammed first, and I replaced that.

I figured the Bukh was just too old to rebuild plus I had only paid $2,000 for the boat.

This all occurred in 2011.

I ordered my outboards new, and they were delivered by UPS.

Luckily I ordered a 5 HP which weighed just 58 lbs.

Re: Bracket for 25hp outboard on yacht?

Indeed, we're quite undecided on the final solution.
The Bukh was ok when it worked but a beast for the canal. We're going to be based on a canal mooring right near the sea lock. So, we either go up and down the canal or out to sea. Thinking that an outboard is just fine for the canal and maybe fire up the Bukh for the sea. But this is all speculation right now.

I've got an outboard bracket on order, one way or another there is going to be an outboard on the yacht. I've got an engine to use to get to the new mooring and after that I'll decide on the long term outboard.

If the Bukh is in use and the outboard is for backup, or another scenario.

Just got to get it away from the current swinging mooring very soon.
