Yep, being an engineer I can do either, but 455 mm means nothing in your head. however 18" does.
USA will convert over when you metricheads decide how Pi fits in, and how time too.
I suggest 10 hours in a day , 10 days a month... etc
Then, for Pi, we'll have to come up with something else I guess...
If God wanted us metric he would have made 10 hour days....

Huh... how does Pi fit in in the USA system of measurements?????

It is simply a ratio of circumference to diameter and one that cannot expressed as simple fraction.

The metric heads don't seem to have any problem with this concept but maybe there is another concept of Pi that peculiar to the USA?????

Pi would have to be 10, or 100 or....
In the US anything can be anything that works ... like 3.1416....

you mean 31416 of 10,000 - thats looks like metric to me

Of course 3.1416 isn't Pi

How about 2pi radians??? Now THERE's something really easy to wrap your head around.
If we had just evolved with one more finger on each hand, then math would have been base 12 (dozen) and everything would be unicorns and rainbows.

I find for me it's the exact opposite. Raised on fractions, building construction and cabinetry making. An inch you say? What part? 1/64? 1/32? 1/16? 1/8? 1/4? 1/2? On a tape, short lines 1/16, longer short lines 1/8, even longer short lines 1/4, medium lines 1/2, long lines 1in
A mm is a mm. Period. Now building US Navy warships in mm's. So much easier. On tape, each line is a mm...plans say 594mm off the bulkhead, 150mm above deck or 23 3/8 off bulkhead and 5 5/16 above deck (actually just under, as there is no exact conversation)
Give me mm anyday!!
