More recently I ran across a news article in the Sept issue of Seahorse magazine which discusses the very interesting full scale prototyping work being carried out on a J-90 class boat by Eric Hall of Hall Spars.

Eric is now on his third-generation, free standing ,carbon wing rotating mast, with a una-rig mainsail. His “ thought process (and maybe not entirely logical) was: If biplanes became monoplanes and monoplane wings shed wires, why not an unstayed una-rig upwind” Boy, you would surely think this was the ideal upwind rig.

In responding to an inquiry on upwind performance, Eric responds, “ first, of course, the boat would be improved upwind with a No.1 jib. Generally, we could not point as high as the others here (Block Island) and therefore had difficulty holding lanes.”

He goes on to say, “this is a very interesting project that we especially want to succeed. I have been accused of a missionary zeal, which frankly keeps moving it along. It’s a real problem sometimes keeping focused on what we are trying to do in view of all that is ingrained in our minds about what makes sailboats work. Anyway we are having fun…

I have the luxury of spending all my time doing pretty much what I want when I want:

- sail about anything that floats
- ride mountain bikes and road bikes (bicycle type) all over San Diego county
- drink beer and read lots of books

The wife shops, cooks, and cleans so I get to go out on a wide variety of boats. I only included the multihulls in the list I posted. We live in a marina with 750 slips and there are frequent needs for a deck hand, several of my friends are full time captains who always need free crew and a couple other friends are full time boat mechanics who frequently need a free hand and line tender.

Life is good for a retired boat bum with a tolerant and understanding wife who supports me in the style I so much enjoy here in hot and sunny San Diego.

Check out the Voyage catamarans, they tend to hold some value better than any other charter cat. They are not a high production factory but have been in business long enough to have a pretty good reputation as a builder too. Look for an owners version, they come available occasionally.

Who would think a boat that did not sell for 2-years when listed at $525,000 in the huge SoCal boat market sell for $655,000 in the relatively small Hawaii market?

My understanding was the person who purchased the boat in San Diego took it to Hawaii to use in charter service. The boat was built in Belgium. The Jones Act would prohibit the use of such a boat for service between two US Ports.

Aren't those French boats built in South Carolina or Rhode Island?

I am definitely not a Jones Act expert. The boat's captain under the prior owner tried to get the necessary permits and licenses to do domestic US charters and was unable.

I may also just be spreading a rumor but was given the info by a broker involved with the sale last spring.

Maybe we'll buy her in Hawaii and go sailing from there - can't be a bad place to start from can it?

I know someone who does it on a Freydis, advertises widely on the web so I assume it's all legitimate.
