Voyage or Seawind

Voyage 480 or Seawind 1600? Which would you choose for a new build?

Both seem to be quality builders, Voyage seems to offer a lot of boat for the money. I know nothing about Voyage, do they build a quality boat compared to Seawind?

Thanks in advance...

as there does not seem to be any replies on this have enclosed a web seminar link where the new SW 1600 is explained in details, gives a good overview of the styling and concept.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting that.

It begs an obvious question.

If we look at displacements of boats around this length. :

O51 9.9T
Balance 526 (normal) 9.5T
V480 10.5T
Shionn Wilderness 1500X 7 Tonne
Seawind 1600 13T

I understand the displacement of European boats as they conform to CE "lightship" specifications. As I understand it the Schionning displacement is boat weight after manufacture without water, fuel and rig. On inquiry balance supposedly adhere to CE specification.

This leaves the remaining issue of Seawind. What displacement standards do they conform to. One assumes at the weight they advertise this is in fact a boat fully equipped with water, fuel and rig. If not this is one seriously heavy boat.

Schionning displacement includes the rig and sails along with allowances for other bitss and pieces. Perhaps give Jeff a call -

Re: Voyage or Seawind

I chose Voyage. My new 480 is halfway between Africa and Brazil, on delivery to Tortola. I plan to be in the BVI for her arrival in October!

I chose Voyage for several reasons:

I plan to put the boat in the charter fleet, and having quite a bit of experience with Voyage Charters, I am confident the boat will be well taken care of. Voyage also offers several options with regards to the use of the boat. Anywhere from simple yacht management (don't even have to charter the boat) to standard charter the hell out of the boat to make some money

I like the boat- a lot. The boats (seem) are well built. They come with nice systems, and they sail reasonably well (nice rig, relative low weight, lacking foils). I have realized (as has everyone who takes a hard look) that there is no magic answer. There seems to be a difficult vim diagram for the performance/comfort-luxury/cost equation. The Voyage 480 is within the overlap of those three that I can live with. The combination of that and that I really like the people and the company, and the fact that I will not be venturing too far from the Virgin Islands during my vacations, led me the purchase of TrainingWheels, my new Voyage 480

I don't know too much about SeaWind

Re: Voyage or Seawind

Hah, I wish

supposed to go down this week, but the boat may not be there yet. Like building a house, the finish date is never what it was supposed to be. Sailing it over adds to the delays, but I think it will be there on Tuesday. We get to tortola on Wednesday. Nothing like cutting it close, particularly as we have had this in the works for almost a year.

Re: Voyage or Seawind

Totally missed this thread.

We chose Voyage 16 years ago and haven't been disappointed.

One advantage is that the same people (essentially) who build the boat also operate a charter fleet of their boats. So if there is a problem with the build, or more likely the equipment installed, the direct feedback is rapid, and paid attention to. Thus, the private owner benefits in the long run.
