Odd Hull Design?

Interested what you guys think about the hulls on this cat. The cat intrigues me but the hull seems odd and it apparently needs a new mast and a re-power.

The hull design is not that odd, it looks to be or be inspired by Shuttleworth his advantage cats had those lines . Boat looks really good . Put on a fixed rig to fit the sails and more reasonable sized engines 50 hp and you have a good boat . I know Cal the broker he is a straight arrow and really intrested in cats.

They look pretty normal to me. What about them struck you?

The rudders look odd to me - very small, and I would question whether they are enough.

If you visit it, be sure to wear a USC shirt…

My first reaction was also Shuttleworth.

I also agree the rudders are too small. Looks like the owner wanted to beach it.

It had a rotating mast.

I do question the "Fighting Irish" theme, however.....

Otherwise it looks worth a look.

The hull shape (if that's what OP is referring to) is designed to have a narrow , low wetted hull below the waterline and expand out for more interior room above. I see nothing wrong with that. Not exactly a racing hull....

I sailed on the original Tecktron 50 designied by Shuttleworth it had the same basic hull shape , It was a rocket .the 80ft wing mast probably helped

I saw that boat when I was in Tarpon Springs this summer, just from a casul observation as we were passing by, it looked like it had been in the water for a long time based on growth on the hulls

I know it says it need repowered but I wondered if they mean just the rig as in sail power. The Volkswagen engines have fairly low hours. And are these clones for any of the other more common engines like Volvo or Yanmar?


FWIW JSI has a mast fabrication shop in St. Pete so a new rig might not be too complicated or expensive.

Close - its almost certainly an Owen Easton design, in fact 99.99% sure its Owen's design perhaps Peter Kerr, and given Tim's boats "owe" a fair bit to both Owen and Peter, I can see why you would think that.

Owens boats have a good reputation overall. Price seems a little high given you need motors and rig apparently?

If it never had a rig, it would be no surprise if it's motors were worn out..

That type of stepped hull isn't exactly rare. even some production boats have them. Leopard cats for one.

Nice looking boat. I guess the daggerboards have stayed in the "Up" position for a long time, now? Is it hard to put them down and bring them back up again without the mast to hoist them with? I worry about moving parts that don't get moved for a long time in the ocean.
