dates for match racing should be set months ahead and adhered to so the result would be a true race whether it was a perfect 15 knots or a raging gale. How about making it real?

I'm thinking it isn't going to be a very interesting race but I am still interested to see the technology. Of course, if there's not something resembling real match racing going forward (i.e., the 34th defense), my interest level would wane fairly quickly.

I say penalize them 20 seconds per race for every lawsuit they file.

LOL... in that case the race will be delayed about 30 hours...

Pretty soon, they'll have to increase capacity on these boats - every crewmember will bring along his/her lawyer...

Multis typically loose several boat lengths in each tack, partly due to their tracking ability, and partly due to the speed of their non-tacking opponent- I don't expect to see much match racing this year because of that. If one team tries to draw the other into a tacking duel, the race is already lost. Both boats will probably sail out towards their ideal wind (which probably won't even be close to what is reading at sea level since their rigs are so tall) and will most likely only cross paths at the marks (unless one is far ahead). There will probably be very few close crossings out on the course. The starting sequence should be the most interesting part of the race. I expect Alinghi to engage BMWO since BMWO has proven thus far to be the faster boat. BMWO will probably prefer to just stay out on their own end of the line alone if possible.

As far as the two class idea, that's not conducive to the structure of the America's Cup. It would take a new Deed of Gift, and since that's as unlikely as Alinghi not taking Oracle to court over the wing, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Despite enjoying monos over multis myself, I think this America's Cup with huge multis racing along at over 20 knots will spark far more public interest to the non-sailing community over of the previous years (save for DC winning the Cup back from the Aussies). It should be an interesting race!

I watched the owners' press conference this morning. Ellison didn't show up, and the organizers barred Couts from taking his place since he was a skipper not an owner. Then Bertarelli, alone at the mike, called upon his skipper, Butterworth, to field one of the questions about why they can't sail these $10,000,000 boats in anything more than a one-meter swell. It was a fairly ridiculous spectacle, all around.

I've told members of our sailing team that if they don't represent the university well, they won't sail. Period. The shame of this regatta is that our national sailing authorities, and by this I specifically mean US Sailing, haven't got the wherewithal to pull the plug on syndicates who don't represent their nations well.

What part of "friendly competition between nations" don't these guys get?

I think the answer is in the question, Bash. It's the "nations" part that they don't get. It has truly become a competition (and not a friendly one, either) between deep-pocketed individuals with out-sized egos. Then, too, there is the fact that the crews are now a multinational assemblage of mercenaries, selling their services to the highest bidder.

This is EXACTLY the reason why a lot of tradesmen won't work on a lawyers boat.

These swinging schlongs are about as interesting as the gold chained old pharts in Fort Liquordale on their go-phast boats that they take out of the inlet for 1/2 hour trips.

this is not the Americas cup Yacht race any more by racing with multi hull yachts when traditionally the little Americas cup was raced using multi hull yachts
