Marina fees

I own and live on a mono-hull so please do not shoot me. lol My wife ask me today about fees to dock a catamaran at a marina due to the wide beam. I told her I would find out and let her know. Do you have to pay for 2 slips or do they have a special rate?

Many marinas have multihull slips
Some charge more, some don't
T heads are what you want to find...

The marina I was at before taking up full time cruising charges 30% more for a cat slip, but would rent the T head to a cat for the same price as a monohull. Some other places charged more for a cat even on the T, but not all places. I was once charged $50 for mooring because I was a cat instead of $35. I never did quite figure that one out, but it was the only time I was ever charged extra on a mooring. I don't use Marinas very often but I've not been charged extra on a T that I can recall. Many years ago I was at a marina that charged by the size of the slip that you needed not by the length of your boat. I had to rent a 65 foot slip to get one wide enough to accomodate our beam.

We've owned catamarans for over 23 years and have never been charged more.

Extra charges for multihulls are nearly everywhere on the East coast of Oz these days. The extent of the surcharge varies, but is often double (since you occupy the space where two monohulls could berth. Some places are less mean, and a very few don't charge extra.

The marinas in New Caledonia share this practice.

Those are the only areas that I have personally observed.

Most marinas in the Caribbean charge 1.5 times mono cost, even at the end of a tee or if the water was too shallow for the average mono. Can't think of anywhere where I didn't pay extra.

However, our cat was so comfortable to live on at anchor or on a mooring, we hardly ever spent nights in a marina.

It looks like the question is, would YOU like to purchase a cat?

If yes, then I'd tell her that there are many places that charge the same either way, and you can always find a marina that doesn't tack on a surcharge for cat's.

If no, then I'd tell her that the global trend is to surcharge for cat's and some even charge by the sq. ft. (meter).

Rarely double, and as a director of a marina company I do try and stay abreast of this, in fact I do employ staff who, inter alai, keep a track on comparatives. As for two monos could use the space, not even one mono could use the space I park in, way to shallow.

Which leads me to remember to lead a protest against dredging our harbour.

Seriously - we are evaluating the concept of cubic space, to allow for some fairness in that it seems inappropriate to charge for extra beam and not charge for the dredging that has to occur.

For dry storage over hurricane/cyclone season Nany Cay in BVI's charges per square metre, but Marina Del Rey in Fajarto Puerto Rico charges only by length. Understandably Marina Del Ray is booked out way in advance.
We ONLY use marinas when we need to leave the boat for more than 24 hrs.

Where we are in the Med, you take a mooring (that's a berth to u'all) of a stated size. If you are larger, either LOA or beam--you are assigned, and pay for, the appropriate size. Moorings are typically 8 m x 2.5, 10 x 3 m, 12 x 4 m, etc., but not always. By nature of their beam, cats typically pay double. As a result, cats in marinas are rare.

Similarly, hard storage charge by square meters--but I can't think of any off the top of my head of with travel lifts which lift cats.
