My understanding is that Yanmar is standard and that the Volvo is an "upgrade". But I'm no expert, clearly.

Yep...they were hauling out almost annually and were none to happy about the costs of that! But it was still quick swap out compared to waiting on the saildrive rebuild. The last one they did in the crane slings and rebuilt the saildrive when back in the water at their leisure.

Egads! Rebuilding every other year. What was going wrong, seals, bearings, clutch assembly? Perhaps seal replacement every other year would not be way out of line. Maybe they had some rough/worn surfaces on the shaft that would wear out seals unusually quickly. I'm no expert but this seems pretty important to get to the bottom of as I am interested in the Lagoon 410.

Thanks, Eric

Re: Lagoon 380 Under Contract - Stuff to Check?

Check the sail drive oil for colour and make sure its not milky. I have Volvos with 4000 plus hours on them on a 2000 model year hull #24. Sail drives have been replaced once as the previous owner left them several years without checking / changing the zincs, electrolysis ate them away. If you have the option pull an oil sample from each of the engines and have it tested. Will show any excess metals and give you a base line should you purchase. Check the saloon floor for soft spots. I have not had the issue but have heard of a few cases. check the rubber boot on the exhaust / heat exchanger exit. The Volvos are prone to corrosion issues at the steel elbow there. I have done one of those and one heat exchange unit. I have good quality bronze through hulls but they were on the boat when I got it 5 years ago. I do not know if they are original or not. I have heard via this site that there have been issues before but I believe it was on newer model year hulls. Mine has original ports and hatches. Some of the hatches have crazed Lexan that I'll replace someday. Wiring in mine is a rats nest that I am trying to work through. Part Lagoon part 3 previous owners all with different ideas as to how a boat should be wired
Get a surveyor you trust to give it the once over and good luck. PM me if you wish.
