Jet propulsion

I did a brief search but did not find anything about converting from propeller drive to jet drive.
I don't know how efficient a jet drive is compared to a propeller when under power but I would think it would be much less drag when sailing. I also do not know how well a jet drive would work for reversing.
Any thoughts or info appreciated.

Re: Jet propulsion

get a folding or feathering prop. the amount of hull/engine modifications necessary to implement this idea would be enormous. Jetskis use a drop clamshell to reverse thrust. You might see something similar out your passenger seat window when landing after a commercial flight. Just where would you fit the clamshell thrust reverser?

Re: Jet propulsion

Amen to PirateGuy's wisdom. You'd be seriously interfering with your midline hull strength. Conceivably you could mount the clamshell on the transom if your transom stays in the water. But really, a modern prop is a simple solution compared to discovering that you've really made a bad mistake many thousands of dollars into the modification.

Re: Jet propulsion

It's a little early but new technology might make it possible and looks to be more efficient than current drive leg and prop setup.

Re: Jet propulsion

2 jetskis inserted / attached at the back of the hulls - can be detached and used as dingies, while attached they are the engines!?

Re: Jet propulsion

Jet-drive outboards are available, starting at 3.5 hp....

Re: Jet propulsion

Very poor efficiency at low speeds.

Notice fast jet planes have small diameter engines
And diameter has gotten bigger over years - more efficient (but slower. 707 was much faster)
Helicopter is ultimate example - zero speed at hover, huge diameter.
V22 Osprey is compromise

So yes - possible
But very poor efficiency until 40+ knts.

Now - if you get to 40+ knts - well......

Re: Jet propulsion

There was a company called Wolfpack producing complete jet drive systems for multis back in the early 80's. the only person I know that had experience with one was unimpressed, mentioned that trying to maneuver around docks and marinas was quite interesting. They didn't seem to be very successful.
