Re: GreenCat 605 First Pictures

**** happens ... may be the "patented" design was too much. Electric-diesel is a good idea but using a huge Li-bank seems just a little bit too much of innovation ... :-)

Re: GreenCat 605 First Pictures

What a tragedy! It breaks my heart to hear of any cruiser going down or being swept on to a reef but there was such a hugh amount of work, talent and cutting edge technology that went in to building this vessel, it makes it doubly tragic. I hope there was no loss of life and some insurance to fall back on. Phil

Maybe it wasn't too bad. There hasn't been anything written on the web about it that I can find except this thread. Usually when a boat of this size and expense is truly lost there are all kinds of news reports and forum posts.

The builder has been a marketing expert when it comes to how his cats will theoretically work and perform, but when it comes to the ultimate "proof is in the pudding," he has ALWAYS been absent in backing up his hyperbole of hundreds of claims in threads posted here, much to the disappointment of those who salivate about his 'green' sailing ambitions and how his builds (albeit much fewer builds claimed than actual) are the cruising equivalent of a new sliced bread.

Blah blah blah - good to see you know how to jump on a bandwagon.

What does that have to do with my post?

And people like Winston are what's wrong with the internet. What have you done to advance the technology of cruising? It doesn't sound like the boat was the problem, it was just put into a bad situation. Many other boats have been grounded too.

I guess you haven't been on this forum long? Maybe do a little Internet searching yourself.

The issues with Gideon have been well documented here and on other forums. Again, what does that have to do with this boat grounding, if it actually did. It has cracked me up how you all are like sharks in the water with him.

Re: GreenCat 605 First Pictures

Just to correct any misconceptions, there was little cosmetic damage, and he was towed off by a touristy pirate boat. (and a good job too) The reef is fine.

The diesel electric concept is well tried and tested. The most reliable method is to couple an engine to a motor/generator to the prop by two clutches and a transmission. Electrical recovery is possible from trailing props, electricity can come from renewables and from the motor in generator mode while running the engine. And if, in the case of emergency, you need an engine you have an engine!
WWII submarines used this.

Re: GreenCat 605 First Pictures

The point is to get away from the problems with diesel engines. The maintenance, repairs, fuel leaks, smell, cost of fuel, etc. Now, it might be limited with how big a boat electric only will work for, but it will get there soon enough. If we don't take chances and try new things, nothing will improve.

For me electric propulsion is the way to go. Be it short distances on battery alone, or extended distances with solar and/or diesel. Until you have maneuvered in tight, current plagued settings, you don't know what you are missing. All available torque at 1 rpm, not needing to clunk in and out of gear at 700 rpm diesel idle speed, and a smooth linear transition from forward to astern.

I want a power cat version - but it has to have diesel motors - small ones - just enuf for power production.
