Re: GreenCat 605 First Pictures

Lots of innovation, which is always a good thing for the breed.

A picky little point, how do you attach an anchor bridle and clear a fouled anchor, its often interested me with cats that bring their anchors up to the bridge deck.

Re: GreenCat 605 First Pictures

Hallo Eric, depending on sailed speed up to 150 mm lift should be possible i will attach a polar for a indication of possible speeds with a loaded weight of 17.5 tons
If you look at 6 knots of true wind like we had on the first trial the speed at 90 degrees shows 7.5 knots speed and that was on the dot.
greetings

Hallo Factor the anchor bridle leeds back to the hatch that is located on the rear side of the compression beam over the stored anchor location , the seawater tap is located next to the anchor winch so with the hatch open the anchor is below and easy to clean or attach the bridle. I will take a picture and show you the solution.

greetings

Hi Gideon,

Have been looking at those polars; are you sure they are correct? Double digits OK but your polar shows over 20 knots in 16 knots (a good 4 bft) at a little over a beam reach. If no mistakes were made that is truly spectacular.

What will happen when it really starts to blow?

Eric

Hi Gideon,
Very interested in these electric drives, are you able to supply performance stats for them ,and size and type of gen sets to run them.
What range can you get out of them on battery power only.
Size and type of batteries.
Lately there has been a lot of electric drives that hav'nt lived up to expectations,if you can make it work you will be onto a winner

Hallo Eric, the proof of the pudding is in the eating , so far with the limited wind we have had the 605 was performing as the polars show. we where able to point up to 28 degrees app. that was amazing. at 6 knots of wind at 90 degrees she did 7.5 and that is closer to what the polar shows.
I will keep you posted on further trials later this week when all the sails are back, small adjustments are made to the Genoa and stormsail and we placed Blocks further aft for both the gennaker and the code zero.

Greetings
Gideon

Re: GreenCat 605 First Pictures

Great looking cat, and nice innovation ideas.

I thought (and read) the optimal propellers for propulsion and generation were quite different, your thoughts on this ?

Hallo Thorcat we have been working on the system since 2003 and have had yachts in the water since 2008 and the Cat that was launched in 2009 has done in excess of 20.000 and besides tweaking, changing props for optimal speed while having good regeneration all is fine.
We use Lithium batteries , 25 Kw in the 44 ft cat and 50 Kw in the 61 ft cat and this is enough to cruise for 8 hours ( 5 knots ) or 3 hours at 7 knots.
So far we have used Mastervolt units but we are looking to change to a battery with more power per kilo.
We use Polar power gensets en they are modified for us and made lighter with Aluminum sound box to save weight, present weight for the 22 Kw unit 202 KG
we work with 160 V DC 160 Amps for the 44 ft and double that capacity for the 61 ft.
That is for propulsion only, the House batteries also Lithium are 16 or 25 KW size depending.

You are right many have tried and so far the outcome was not good, the difference is that we start out with a efficient yacht and only use lightweight and efficient components made for us in order to go fossil fuel free.
Besides that we also make optimal use of solar and wind power on the 61 ft 2400 Wp solar power and a wind gen mast head mounted of 400 watt nominal.
The complete boat is electric there is no gas on board,

Hallo Yves , yes prop for propulsion and for optimal regeneratin g are different, we have chosen a good in between prop, with the 44 ft cat we have a top speed of 8 kknots under power and a best regenerating at 10 Knots is 6 Kw per hour
The type of prop used for the 10 KW is a 3 blade prop with a DAR of 54 % and the side and speed is 16 x 8 inch.
Greetings

Thanks for that info Gideon,
Just afew more questions You say that the 605 has 22kw dc Polar gen sets ,but i cant find these sets on Polars web site, What size and type of engine is driving the generators?

What top boat speed are you able to achieve with the gen sets going.
Thanks

Hallo Thorcat the generatros are build specially for us and we use 40 HP volvo penta engines to power them. the top speed is 8 knots with or without the gensets going

I think the pudding should be entered in the heineken. Those polars and claims compare favorably to the gunboats. Let's see how she eats.

Good Morning Winston, I will keep all posted on the actual performance, Joinig the Heineken Regatta is not in the works, This cat will sail to Australia and from there go in to the Pacific South Sea to help people with medical problems, for that reason there is a surgical theatre on board.

Greetings

Hallo Factor, as promised the pictures of our solution to come to the anchor in order to clean and set the bridle

I also attached a picture of the New Greenpeace Vessel, this one is a sailing version so save on fuel with double a frame masts and roller furling sails throughout

Kind regards

Gideon

Today we took some pictures of the GreenCat 605 while under sail, again with minimal wind
6 / 9 knots so no sensational speeds ( yet )

Re: GreenCat 605 First Pictures

Can't wait (like yourself probably) to see some pictures with her showing her real potential; I really liked the picture of her little sister sporting a rooster tail when she was sailing the way she was intended to do.
