Buying a Catana - What to Look for During Survey ?

Hi Folks,

I am in the process of buying a Catana 471. The boat looks in near perfect condition, but even so, I am having it hauled out and getting a survey by a surveyor who has Catana experience, a rig inspection by Allyacht Spars and an engine and saildrive service and inspection by the Volvo mechanics. Is there anything else I should be doing, or any common problems or known issues with this model boat that I should be on the lookout for?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you have it covered. On any cored boat the most important check is to go over every square inch with a moisture meter. Good luck.

I would recommend the surveyor sound the entire boat, not just below the waterline for delamination.

Thanks for the warning. Turns out they couldn't do it so I am going with a different rigger. He seems real professional, so hopefully it will work out for the best.

no worries

not a problem glad to be of help. I wrote an article about what had happened to me, but Australian Multihull MAgazine wouldnt print. Get this, because they were an advertiser. Long story short, I had to sue which cost heaps was without cat for almost a year and then they settled in/out of court.
Thankfully we now have these type venues so the truth can get out, and other sailors want have the same thing happen...hopefully

Poozer - quite a few folks, myself included, would be interested in the results of the survey. And folks, this applies to surveys of other boats also.

You will probably be busy with getting the cat ready to go but if you have the time please post some thoughts post survey.

gbanker: Yes, I will definitely post all my experience with the survey and purchase process when I'm done. Stay tuned...

multihull1: We should definitely connect. I'm in Texas but the boat I'm looking at is in Mooloolaba. I've been living in the US for 20 years, but my family is still in Brisbane. We intend to start cruising in Oz real soon. I'll give you a call over the weekend.
