Best aspect of aft-mast rig: Panoramic views

On a recent sail down through the Philippines I realized one of the best aspects of my new aft-mast rig is how nearly everything is behind you when sailing. If you have a home on the ocean, you don't want to have to look through a telephone pole covered in wires. Essentially that is what most boats have.



There is only one line in front of me a you see me sitting on the deck. That ball is where the old mast used to sit. On one Bermuda rig I counted 23 line extending from a typical mast down to deck level.


While the sail in this photo may look small, it was able to move the boat at 7.4 knots in a moderate breeze. This isn't the custom sail I designed for my rig.


That sail take up more of the available area and is self-tacking. It can be seen in this video.
